OverviewGeneral ManagerUIC Bowhead Transport LLC is based in Anchorage, Alaska and provides mixed line haul barging / cargo transportation, river barging / cargo transportation, remote project mobilization, lightering services; submarine cable instillation / repair, and geo-survey. Developing short- and long-term business strategies to achieve the strategic objectives determined by the Vice President of Bowhead Transport.

Lead successful execution of annual business plans and deliver expected results for financial performance, shareholder value, and other objectives.

Direct and coordinate all operational activities of the organization to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations and maximize profits by performing duties personally or through subordinates.

Oversee develop and execute business and strategic plans that align with the Bowhead Transport Vice President; COO; Sr Vice President of UIC Commercial Services, UIC President and the UIC Board of Directors’ strategic goals and mission; which are tailored to existing and projected business environments and opportunities; and capitalize on UIC’s strengths.

Emphasize UIC’s unique role and responsibility as a Native Corporation leading the industry in safety of our employees; the environment and our equipment / property.

Lead Managers to include recruiting and supervising highly effective staff; guiding their strategic planning and business plan development to ensure alignment with Bowhead Transport’s broader strategies and coordination with other UIC entities; monitoring performance against those plans; providing coaching and direction; Review financial statements; sales and activity reports; and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and program improvement for the Operation and Maintenance Department.

Direct and coordinate with Bowhead Transport VP, Director of Operations, Director of Marine Services and the UIC Sr Vice President, budget activities to fund operations; maximize investments; and increase efficiency.

Analyze the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriateplan for safety and success.

Identify emerging and existing business opportunities; establish relationships and promote Bowhead Transport’s capabilities with key decision makers; and position Bowhead Transport to pursue and win new business coordinating efforts with the Bowhead Transport Director of Commercial Services and the Director of Pricing.

Work with the corporation’s Counsel to ensure legal obligations are met and compliance with federal and state law. Must understand Alaska Native, American Indian, and multicultural working environments.

Ability to build; motivate; and sustain a high-performing management team and create strategic plans that underpin the short- and long-term viability of the business.

Ability to make effective strategic decisions efficiently.

Ability to manage internal and external political challenges with the long-term vitality of Bowhead Transport and the UIC corporation.

Possess excellent written and verbal communication skillsReply to email and telephone calls in a timely manner.

Assist in the preparation of regularly scheduled reports.

Attend Corporate or sales events as directed by Bowhead Transport VP and develop presentations for events.

Assist in the development of web site and advertising updates.

Assist in the planning and coordination of company-wide policies and procedures.

Work with UIC HR department.

QualificationsGeneral Manager Requirements

Must be based in the Anchorage, Alaska area.

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marine project management or another relevant field. Comparable experience may be substituted for the education requirement including but not limited to mariner experience and marine industry management.

A minimum of fifteen years of experience in Marine Operations Leadership and Business Development positions with progressive increases in the size and scope of responsibilities.

Demonstrated track record of leading a Marine Services organization to grow; be profitable; and deliver expected or greater returns to shareholders in a safe and environmentally sound manner.

Demonstrated knowledge of Marine laws; regulations; and protocols required.

Positive working relationships with numerous key Alaska and lower 48 Marine Clients and service providers

Experience in planning and overseeing vessel construction.

Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Strong organizational and planning skills

Proficient in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Adobe, Teams, Outlook, etc.)

Must have a valid driver’s license.

General Manager Should Possess

The ability to travel.

The willingness to work flexible hours or overtime, including weekends as needed.
