JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for supporting the simulation learning activities of the nursing programs. Under the direction of the Nursing Director, the Simulation Laboratory Technician will provide technical and mechanical support for the nursing simulation and laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Promote the APU nursing programs by providing tours and visiting high schools and secondary schools. Coordinate external communications with representatives of other nursing simulation facilities, nursing alumni, political representatives and senior administration to promote the growth and support of nursing programs and the simulation center. Participate in simulation partnerships meetings within the community.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Collaborate with the nursing director to oversee the budget and expenditure of the NRC. Identify financial needs. Work with nursing faculty and administration to ensure expenditures effectively meet student learning outcomes. Provide cost effective recommendations for allocation of funds. Collaborate with the administration to submit grants to secure additional funding from outside resources.

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT: Assist nursing faculty in skills lab instruction and simulated patient learning experiences at varying degrees of complexity, using low, medium and high-fidelity equipment for students in Anchorage and rural campuses. Communicate with course coordinators to schedule labs and support for remediation of nursing students. Coordinate nursing simulation schedules, manage the deployment of nursing simulated learning experiences and assist faculty with delivering clinical simulation and standardized patient instruction to students

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Assess and organize physical resource needs for nursing labs, skills, health assessment and simulation laboratories. Anticipate equipment and supply needs and develop strategies for meeting needs. Collaborate with clinical agencies to solicit donations of surplus unused equipment/materials. Manage simulation licenses and provide updates for simulators. Order supplies, equipment & learning materials ensure that software use is in accordance with licensing agreements. Ensure distribution and delivery of appropriate supplies to outreach sites. Complete lab material audit annually. Travel may be required.

PERSONNEL: Hire, train, mentor and supervise student workers who are responsible for lab preparation and set-up

DOCUMENTATION & SCHEDULING: Maintain class and usage schedules for skills and health assessment labs. Schedule equipment maintenance and upgrades. Prepare and maintain a procedure manual to guide the set-up for each lab course, to include pictures demonstrating specific supplies and set-up for each skill taught in each lab course. Establish a regular procedure for updating policies, procedures and course manual. Interpret OSHA standards, purchase required supplies/equipment, update records, and disseminate information to outreach sites to comply with regulations. Evaluate and track unusual occurrence reports to comply with OSHA policies and procedures.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Completion of undergraduate degree preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

1-3 years’ experience in healthcare or technology-assisted learning environment.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Advanced computer skills preferred. Experience with simulation learning and health-related academic or training programs strongly preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Occasional night or weekend work may be required.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this job. The position is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, or kneel. The employee must be able to lift and/or carry boxes & packages weighing up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
