Working Independently, the Server Engineer Senior leads the Engineering practice with a focus on optimizing the delivery of infrastructure platforms, automated pipelines and robust feedback systems

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sharing expertise and insight with other engineers
  • Generate and revise server, operating system, database, applications and network standards. Ensure delivered platforms meet functional and technical requirements.
  • Performs diagnostic analysis, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of public and private cloud infrastructure. Identifies inefficiencies in deployment/build process and provides solutions. Server setup, installation and configuration.
  • Translate requirements into technical designs and product roadmaps
  • Server capacity planning, forecasts server growth, consults vendors, plans and executes server installation. Collaborates with programmers and database administrators to optimize server performance.
  • Uses communication skills to listen to, identify & address customer needs while building a relationship and rapport with customers.
  • Ensure the appropriate level of documentation to support the operation.
  • Prioritizes and responds promptly based on severity levels to needs of the customer. Proactively or timely recognizes opportunities for service recovery and acts to resolve issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging server tools and technologies.
  • Lead the development of highly available and scalable platforms. Ensure all phases are being automated. Advocate for new platforms when necessary.
  • Advocate for new build and deployment platforms. Align new applications with the CI/CD practice.
  • Lead the design and development of monitoring, discovery, reporting, alerting and analytic systems and tools. Collaborate with SRE and monitoring teams.
  • Design, develop and support improvements to the value stream as a result of the feedback gathered from monitoring.
  • Collaborate with product teams, operations management and stakeholders to optimize system feedback. Monitor and provide guidance to other system engineers.
  • Coach other system engineers and identify opportunities that improve Discount Tire's system capabilities; including industry trends, research organizations, user groups, and technical conferences.
  • Define and teach the engineering innovation practice. Advocate for change and deliver innovation to the IT Engineering organization. Ensure concepts are implemented quickly and assess the results.
  • Complete work in a timely and accurate manner while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Mentor and coach Systems Engineers
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • This position requires a minimum of 5 years of hands-on Systems Engineer experience in enterprise infrastructure design, automation, and administration supporting over 1000 servers
  • Expert knowledge of private and public cloud environments (Azure, AWS, VMware)
  • Expertise creating automated scripts. Experience with automation and orchestration tools like TerraForm, Chef, etc.
  • Broad technical and practical skills with common infrastructure systems including but not limited to: ESXi, Virtual Center, vSAN, Linux, Microsoft Windows Server, Server Clustering, MS Active Directory, Group Policy, Enterprise backup, Storage, server hardware, network protocols, DNS/DHCP, general networking concepts
  • Proven ability to build professional relationships with cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability of excellent communication across all levels of the organization, interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to write in a clear and concise manner.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft office, including skills with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio is necessary.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, review information to develop and evaluate options, then implement solutions is essential.
  • Ability to influence and provide consistent results across all levels of the organization is imperative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with a positive demeanor, generating innovative solutions to complex challenges.

Education Requirements:
  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field or equivalent work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors server performance, virtualization performance and provides utilization projections. Monitors backup system performance and reliability. Monitors messaging performance and performs troubleshooting of errors.
  • Performs diagnostic analysis, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of networks and servers. Identifies inefficiencies in deployment/build process and provides solutions. Server setup, installation and configuration.
  • Configures and maintains HA configurations of various types. Defines the hosts in the backup system and establishes schedules.
  • Allocates Servers based on application needs using the appropriate protocols and tiers.
  • Server capacity planning, forecasts server growth, consults vendors, plans and executes server installation. Collaborates with programmers and database administrators to optimize server performance.
  • Uses communication skills to listen to, identify & address customer needs while building a relationship and rapport with customers.
  • Builds positive working relationships with team members, managers & all departments.
  • Ensure the appropriate level of documentation to support the operation.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Completes IT Governance & IT project job assignments to ensure achievement of established project milestones
  • Prioritizes and responds promptly based on severity levels to needs of the customer. Proactively or timely recognizes opportunities for service recovery and acts to resolve issues.
  • Provide technical assistance in server planning, engineering and architecture.

  • Develop and manage a robust data backup and retention strategy

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • This position requires a minimum of five years of direct professional programming experience (Java proficiency preferred)
  • Expert knowledge of object-oriented programming principals
  • 5+ years of professional experience with REST APIs and other types of web services
  • Hands-on experience building highly scalable applications and infrastructures (AWS experience preferred)
  • 3+ years of professional experience with SQL and NoSQL database technologies
  • 3+-years of professional experience with caching and queuing technologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated attitude with an ability to carry ideas from inception to completion
  • Experience with setup and maintenance of MS System Center Products.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills - ability to effectively exchange ideas and information and effectively relate to others in order to accomplish work responsibilities.
  • Can effectively communicate issues and resolutions to all levels of the organization.
  • Superior working technical knowledge, including Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Local Area Networks, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and Active Directory to include a detailed understanding of the configuration and operation of Microsoft server products.
  • Experience developing system administration scripts using PowerShell.
  • Experience with setup and maintenance of MS Hyper-V.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills - ability to plan and achieve a variety of tasks. Able to set priorities for client requests and deal with a number of issues concurrently.
  • Experience in setup, configuration, and support of XX technologies
  • Working knowledge with XX technologies and hyper converged infrastructures.

Educational Requirements:
  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, information Technology, IT Engineering or related technical field or equivalent work experience.
  • Computer Networking or other related certification is required.

Work Days: Normal work days are Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary.

Work Hours: Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional hours may be necessary.
