Job Description

The Commission Affairs Officer serves as the operational hub for the Commission on the Environment and sits at the nexus between the Commission and the Department, the Mayor’s Office, other City agencies, the public, and many more. Accordingly, the Officer performs critical administrative, secretarial, and legislative work in connection with the activities of the Department of the Environment, the Commission, and related committees.

A typical day might feature morning engagement with representatives from the Mayor’s Office and Department Program Managers on proposed environmental bills in the California State Legislature. In the afternoon, the Officer may post agendas for the Urban Forestry Council, while finishing talking points for an upcoming Commission meeting. As the day winds down, the Officer will review records to be sent out for an immediate public records request. Finally, the day ends as the Officer staffs and runs a live-on-air, publicly-noticed meeting of the Commission on the Environment.

What You’ll Do - The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this position and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

  • Scheduling, organizing, and preparing agendas/legal notices for Commission/committee meetings;
  • Working with Department staff and then advising the City’s State Legislative Committee on state and federal legislative matters;
  • Setting up and running Commission/committee meetings, and public hearings;
  • Working with the Director and program staff to develop talking points and draft Commission resolutions, meeting minutes, documents, and reports;
  • Responding to Sunshine or public information requests;
  • Serving as a liaison to public bodies and partner organizations, as appropriate; and
  • Working on special projects as they relate to Commission topics like equity, integrated pest management, decarbonization, and others

Appointment TypeThis position is a Permanent-Exempt Appointment. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education - Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university; preferably with major coursework in public administration, law, or related field; and
  • Experience - Six (6) years of progressively responsible administrative office management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, skills in organization and research, and ability to manage multiple complex projects while collaborating with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience complying with legislative and regulatory mandates.
  • Experience navigating and working in or with large organizations.
  • Fluency in Cantonese, Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in San Francisco besides English.
  • An understanding of equity, inclusion and diversity concepts.
  • Education, experience, and/or interest in developing and/or implementing climate, green building, or energy policies.

Additional Information

  • Salary Range - $105,118 - $127,738 per year
