Position Overview:The Director of Clinical Laboratories position exists to direct Clinical Laboratory and Pathology activities at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. This position assures that the staff accurately performs patient tests with the rapid service required by the Medical Staff and within the budget approved by the Medical Center. This Laboratory activity must be performed according to standards and regulations established by Federal, State and Local agencies and must also meet the standards of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). In addition to the leadership and management skills needed to meet these responsibilities, this position must direct the operation of the quality programs, compliance programs, safety programs, EOW programs, and communication programs needed to demonstrate that the Laboratory is meeting all of these requirements. This position works with other Sutter leaders to formulate, collaborate and implement "One Sutter Programs". The position does not perform patient testing.Qualifications:Education/ Licensures/Certifications:Bachelor's degree is required

Master's degree is preferred

Clinical Lab Scientist License - CLS-L or State of California Laboratory Specialist License is required

Experience :Five or more years of experience performing manual and automated diagnostic clinical tests in a hospital Clinical Laboratory setting with sufficient CLIA qualified high complexity testing to qualify as a Technical Supervisor under the CLIA standards is required

Five plus years of additional experience in management activities in a hospital Laboratory with similar technical and management complexity is required

Skills and Knowledge:Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, Administration, co-workers and outside departments.

Must have specific knowledge of CLIA, College of American Pathologists, Joint Commission and California State Laboratory regulatory requirements.

Must have excellent skills in critical thinking, budget development, oral and written communication.

Ability to lead, plan, organize, coordinate and control the activities of the Laboratory and staff.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office required, specifically spreadsheet applications.

Ability and skill to perform the duties of the Laboratory Director at both the Alta Bates and Summit Laboratory Sites.

Strong leadership skills

Keep staff interested/committed while they perform routine, often repetitious procedures

Maintain excellent communication skills (both oral and written), and working relationships with physicians, department managers, and patients.

Ability to design and execute training and education projects to improve staff performance.

Ability to enlist cooperation and build teams committed to carrying out initiatives in an environment that may be resistant to change.

Ability to prioritize multiple objectives in a rapidly changing environment

Communicates complex technical issues in terms that can be understood by patients and staff outside the Clinical Lab.

Understands complex issues and has the ability to translate them into effective action plans.

Monitor and assist in management of costs while providing accurate test results and expected service levels.

Directs Lab organization to provide timely and high quality results to physicians and clients

Directs Lab organization to meet all Federal and State regulatory requirements

Continuously prepares Laboratories and Lab staff to pass unannounced regulatory inspections

Maintain Lab Safety Program in compliance with Federal and State regulations to meet the needs of the Medical Center.

Promotes and actively participates in patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction initiatives.

Assists in developing and managing the expense and capital budgets within the Medical Center guidelines.

Consults as requested with Medical Staff and clients regarding test performance, technical methods and interpretation of test results.

Leads development and documentation of staff competency that is satisfactory to meet accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

Develops, implements and manages the Quality programs and initiatives in the Laboratories as required by the Medical Center and accrediting agencies.

Ability to lead the testing activities in a union environment and participate effectively in union negotiations and grievance processes.

Excellent presentation and computer skills (including hospital and Laboratory Information System

Requires constant mobility, i.e., standing, walking, sitting, operating computers and clinical instrumentation

Ability to lift 25 pounds
