Head of Product, SMA Tech, Director

This product leadership role in Aladdin Wealth Tech is responsible for setting and implementing the product and technology roadmap for BlackRock's Separately Managed Account (SMA) business. We are on a journey to build out the industry's leading platform for outsourced personalized portfolios. SMA Tech is responsible for the technology footprint of our SMA business, responsible for building, buying, and operating the technology underpinning our ambitions.

SMA Tech is a multidisciplinary team of approximately 45 product managers, engineers, UX designers, and QA professionals. This role would lead and mentor the team of product managers and work closely with engineering, UX, and QA, as well as our sales, marketing, L&C, portfolio management, and operations colleagues across the SMA business. The role reports directly into the Head of SMA Tech.

We are looking for an exceptional individual with deep experience in the U.S. wealth management or SMA ecosystems, a proven ability to convert commercial insights into delivered technology, and a passion for the product management field, including developing a team at the forefront of the field.

Key Responsibilities

Set the roadmap. The product director is responsible for primary authorship of the product and technology roadmap, including establishing a technology vision for the business to which sequenced bodies of work ladder. The role is also expected to be a co-author of the commercial vision and strategy, extending beyond technology to influence the investment products and sales priorities of the business.

Implement the roadmap. Lead our team to convert the roadmap into robust specifications and efficiently develop those as enterprise-grade software. Own, design, and iterate on the SDLC in partnership with the engineering directors.

Market expertise. Deep knowledge of the U.S. wealth management ecosystem. Develops unique opinions about developments in the industry that can be converted into commercial strategies or technology deliverables. Harnesses this market expertise to drive how we position our offerings, prioritize our roadmap, and find opportunities for partnerships.

Product Management. Brings a depth of product management experience, a passion for infusing the subject area across the business. Able to author and complete ambitious and achievable roadmaps, to prioritize among competing opportunities, and to drive execution with UX and engineering counterparts.

Commercially Oriented. Understand the economics of the wealth market, technology firms, and BlackRock, with the end goal of identifying commercial partnerships that we should pursue.

Technical insight. Able to identify unique and commercial differentiated capabilities and frame decisions between organic and inorganic approaches to technology development. Able to envision and design technically-feasible integrations, leading detailed specification work with our product and engineering teams, and taking into account user experience, operational scale, and implementation cost.

Stakeholder management. Our SMA business spans niche functions including portfolio management, trading, operations, sales, marketing, L&C, and client service. These teams are our partners. The product director is expected to develop productive relationships with senior members of these teams and design and evolve the engagement models between SMA Tech and these teams.

Desired Qualifications
  • 10+ years of meaningful experience in wealth management or asset management in product management or technology-centric roles
  • Track record of developing and bringing new technology-centric products to market
  • Consistent ability to build and run a product management team and to lead a range of partners, including senior management
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize market feedback to drive new product development or new commercial strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations and communicate up and down the organization
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and planning skills
  • Strong technical abilities with an ability and desire to get in the weeds
