Directs and manages Risk Management and Patient Safety programs for the Service Area. Develops, implements, evaluates and improves an integrated clinical risk management and patient safety program. Program includes proactive prevention, identification, elimination or reduction of the number and severity of clinical risks/losses. Essential Responsibilities: Develops and manages an integrated Clinical Risk Management and Patient Safety strategy across the Service Area.

Responsible for the development, utilization and assessment of uniform systems and processes/techniques/tools, as well as policies/procedures and interventions to assess, identify, prevent and/or reduce risks.

Manages and develops processes to minimize/reduce or prevent losses/risks.

Ensures defined performance management/improvement targets/benchmarks are met.

Ensures regulatory/accreditation standards related to Risk Management and Patient Safety are met.

Ensures that the management of claims events are timely, and effective as to minimize financial consequences/costs.

Works collaboratively with other Regional departments (e.g. Patient Care Services, Claims/Legal, Environmental Health & Safety) and Service Area disciplines/departments (e.g., Quality, Accreditation, Regulation & Licensing, Compliance, Member Services, Finance), to design and implement risk management and loss prevention strategies and programs, as well as performance improvement programs.

Directs and manages the identification/measurement and assessment of risk and/or patient safety issues through data collection, aggregation, quantitative and qualitative analysis and reporting of trends and unusual occurrences by key area, severity, location/department and job.

Facilitates the Risk Management/Patient Safety Committee at each Service Area in partnership with Physician Director.

Assists the Service Area in directing and managing the risk management/patient safety education, training, communications process/services.

Communicates significant event information/analyses.

Develops and maintains effective relationships and communication with all levels of regional and medical center physicians and staff in order to facilitate problem identification and resolution.

Manages the recruitment, retention, performance and development of the departments under his or her direction.

Develops, monitors and controls department budgets as appropriate.

Patient Safety: Accountable to promote an organizational culture of safety and ensure appropriate patient safety standards and guidelines are implemented consistently in the delivery of health care to our patients, including but not limited to: TJC, National Quality Forum, and Leapfrog. Basic Qualifications:

Experience

Minimum 5 years of experience in risk management within an acute care medical center with minimum three (3) years program management/supervisory experience, including experience in planning, implementing and evaluating risk management programs.

Education

Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Nursing, Health Services Administration, Public or Business Administration or Public Health required.

License, Certification, Registration

Professional in Healthcare Risk Management Certificate within 12 months of hire

Additional Requirements:

Ability to demonstrate knowledge of governmental and regulatory standards/ requirements/guidelines related to risk management; medical malpractice, tort principles and proceedings.

Ability to demonstrate knowledge of, and utilize the principles, practices and techniques of patient safety, and risk management, including risk identification, assessment, audit design, analysis, treatment and evaluation of risk management processes and systems (including Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis); quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis; hospital and outpatient medical care delivery; quality management/improvement principles, methods and techniques.

Demonstrated ability to utilize effective oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to utilize consulting, project management and leadership skills such as coaching/mentoring, as well as interpersonal skills such as facilitation, negotiating, and influencing.

Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Note:

Depending on area of operation, may require the following:

Working knowledge of KP Health Connect utilization and reporting capabilities including other adjunctive Information Technology applications/systems.

Self-motivated professional with knowledge of Patient Safety and Risk Management regulatory requirements, principles, practices and intervention strategies.

Demonstrated ability to complete data analysis, develop recommendations and communication of findings to appropriate stakeholders that promote performance improvement - this will link the data from risk claims, significant events reporting, near misses from risk data base into actionable process to improve patient safety.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in one of the aforementioned fields preferred.

Demonstrated leadership, communication and team building skills that effectively motivate and engage staff.

Demonstrated ability to use discretion based on priorities, commitments and current projects in assessing urgency/priorities, accepts or declines appointments and meetings and/or arranges for appropriate representation. Recommend Healthcare license
