Maxar is currently seeking a Director of RF Communication Subsystems to join our team in Palo Alto and San Jose, CA. This is a management position reporting up to the VP of Subsystems and is responsible for the end-to-end scope of the communication subsystem. Scope includes development and management of the communication subsystem technology roadmap in support of the Office of the CTO, all communication subsystem engineering functions (Payload Engineering Managers, communication engineers, communication design, and Telemetry Command and Ranging), communication subsystem (repeater and antenna) make/buy decisions, communication unit (passive & active) engineering design, including vendor and in-house manufacturing technical management, RF unit manufacturing & antenna design / test including vendor technical management, communication panel subsystem test and verification, near-field range test management, and Satellite Antenna Test Range (SATR) test management. The subsystem is also required to provide direct program support via subject matter experts and leads matrixed to a particular program with emphasis on maximizing continuity on the program. You will be accountable for subsystem technical, cost, and schedule performance including risk management and mitigation.You will be supported by mission architects, system engineers, other subsystem groups, engineering services, AIT (Assembly, Integration and Test) and supply chain to perform the detailed engineering, manufacturing and testing necessary to deliver a subsystem that meets its program specifications, cost, schedule and quality targets. The resources required to accomplish this will be available primarily within your own organization, although collaboration and support will be required/provided from the other support groups mentioned as well.- Direct experience in developing and driving both RF design engineering, and RF manufacturing for RF Active/Passive units, plus RF antenna product lines
- Manage Directorate Technical activities to derive technology roadmap strategies in line with Directorate B&P strategy and IR&D Director guidance
- Collaborate with Subsystem Director team members, and across Maxar to align strategic objectives and operational decisions
- Interface with Program Management Office if/when issues are unable to be resolved by the subsystems technical team
- Lead team efforts towards continuous process improvement and innovation initiatives and ensure process adherence
- Create Risk Mitigation planning process that enables the strategic risk taking essential to meet rapidly evolving customer mission demands, while providing the rigor to continuously assess and burn down risk as required to meet cost and schedule objectives
- Provide technical and proactive risk management expertise to serve Project Managers (PM), External Product Engineers (XPE), and Cost Account Managers (CAM) in the planning & execution of in-house and supplier development efforts
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Aerospace related degree required. Four years of additional experience may be substituted for a degree. An MS degree may be counted as two additional years of experience.
- Minimum of 12 years of engineering or technical program management experience in an engineering/manufacturing environment
- Cost and Schedule management experience
- Experience in managing against Program Work Statement / Statement of Work
- Experience in management of contract deliverables
- MS degree
- Experience with SAP cost reporting tools
- Experience in all phases of a satellite development program
- Proposal development and IRAD experience
- Previous experience with spacecraft hardware and software development
- Experience developing governance processes to ensure excellent engineering project execution
- Cost Account Management (CAM) and Earned Value Management (EVM) experience
- Direct experience with aerospace industry design practices
- Experience with managing internal and external vendors/suppliers
- Extensive experience conducting vendor source selection activities for critical procured flight hardware
- Proven skills in issue resolution and decision making across functional groups in a highly complex environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate well with Maxar leadership
- Strong listening ability: Be able to hear what is said, understand what is meant, communicate with stakeholders, and productively engage all involved members
