About the Organization:

The Marin Museum of Bicycling is a premier bicycle history museum and cultural center in Fairfax, California. We are a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organization. Our mission is to illuminate and celebrate cycling's past, present and future. We see the bicycle, the most efficient form of human transport ever devised, growing in popularity and stature through better understanding and appreciation of its rich history and capabilities. Our exhibits include 19th century cycles, transportation, road racing and mountain bikes, and we are the home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Through exhibits, collections and events, we aim to inspire the public with the vibrant history and potential of cycling.

Job Summary:

The Executive Director serves as the most senior officer of the Marin Museum of Bicycling and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization's operations, including strategic planning, staffing, physical plant, financial management, community engagement and advocacy, branding, fundraising, and program development. This role requires a passionate leader who can sustain and grow the museum's mission, reach, and impact.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans to ensure the museum's growth and sustainability. Work closely with the Board of Directors to periodically refine and execute the museum’s vision and goals.

Operational Management: Oversee the museum's daily operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources. This includes staff management, facility maintenance, and exhibit development. These duties require the leader to be “on site” at times.

Financial Oversight: Develop and manage the annual budget, oversee financial reporting, and ensure the financial health of the organization. Identify and pursue opportunities for financial growth through appropriate channels such as donations, grants, memberships, and events.

Fundraising and Development: Lead fundraising efforts to support the museum's operations and programs through board-approved fundraising channels. Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, event sponsors and partners. Secure grants and manage fundraising events.

Community Engagement and Advocacy: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the museum, engaging with the community, media, and industry stakeholders. Maintain and develop a vibrant roster of community volunteers for specific activities. Promote cycling culture; be a passionate advocate for bicycling history, culture and education.

Program and Exhibit Development: Oversee the development of museum programs and exhibits that engage diverse audiences and raise awareness and appreciation of the history, culture and future of bicycling.

Qualifications:

Strategic thinker capable of fostering innovation and positive change, with proven leadership skills to inspire, motivate and effectively manage a diverse team of staffers and volunteers while engaging community stakeholders.

Passion for bicycling, its history and its potential, with knowledge of the bicycling community, advocacy organizations and industry.

Understanding of and commitment to legal requirements and ethical standards for nonprofit educational organizations and museums.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively engaging with a variety of stakeholders including board members, donors, staff, volunteers, and the public.

Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and non-profit financial management.

Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Minimum of 5 years of senior management experience in a museum, nonprofit organization, and/or educational organization .
