The OpportunityThe position of Forensic Toxicologist is within our Toxicology Laboratories located at Santa Rosa, CA . Primary duties include testifying in legal proceedings regarding laboratory test results and procedures, consulting with and interpreting data for criminal justice agencies such as state and district attorneys, public defenders, law enforcement, probation, and parole departments. This role will be instrumental in providing court and testimony services to our clients.What You’ll Work On

Perform review of data to ensure acceptable, reliable, and accurate result reporting

Provide clear, concise and accurate written interpretation of toxicology results

Provide unbiased testimony in court of law when subpoenaed

Perform expert review of casework

Perform forensic evaluations of evidentiary items including the identification, confirmation and quantitation of poisons, drugs and other chemicals in forensic specimens

Answer questions from district attorneys, law enforcement officers and defense attorneys regarding evidence handling, testing procedures, and analytical results

Be clear on chain of custody, policies and procedures, logs, worklists, personnel records and other important documentation of the laboratory to be able to provide the right information to regulatory agencies

Plan, schedule, prioritize, and oversee the workload of forensic personnel

Coordinate training and assess competency of laboratory staff according to established protocols

Perform root cause analysis and documentation of corrective/preventative actions in conjunction with Quality Management personnel and the Laboratory Director

Additional responsibilities include reviewing and certifying laboratory result reports and assisting toxicology support staff with inquiries related to test result interpretations

Update and maintain training, personnel, QA/QC, and other established documentation in regards to laboratory re-tests

Coordinate professional development, document performance, provide ongoing performance feedback, and formally evaluate the work of employees

Keep the Laboratory Director apprised of any activities, changes, and unusual circumstances

Keep management abreast of information critical to the proper planning and coordination of laboratory operation and communicates with other lab personnel.

Follows all safety manuals, standard operating procedures and quality assurance/quality control protocols.

Perform any other duties as designated by the Laboratory director or dictated by the needs of the laboratory

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a life or physical science with 16 semester hours in general and organic chemistry, a statistics course, and two (2) analytical and/or interpretive courses in forensic toxicology, pharmacology, and chemistry; AND ​

Possession or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) as Diplomate.

Prior experience in testifying to forensic toxicology cases is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Recent experience with Sciex (SCIEX OS/Analyst/Multiquant) and Agilent (ChemStation and MassHunter Workstation) software.

Recent experience in method validation of forensic toxicology techniques in accordance to published ASB or other published forensic toxicology standards.

Knowledge or experience in ISO/IEC 17025:2005 or 17025:2017 accreditation requirements.
