Description

LARGE ANIMAL SUPERINTENDENT

This is a non-exempt position, not to exceed 300 hours annually without prior approval of the Association’s Chief Executive Officer.

This is an at-will position with administrative responsibilities and requires contact with the exhibitors and the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Superintendents report to the Association’s Chief Executive Officer and coordinate with members of the HCFA’s Livestock Committee and Junior Livestock Auction Committee.

Exercise direct supervision over Temporary employees and responsible for securing and coordinating judges and volunteers. The Superintendent position exercises direct scheduling, supervision and management over seasonal Livestock Attendant employees during the Annual County Fair.

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

At-will position with differing levels of responsibilities on an as requested basis, with most of the responsibilities relating to the HCFA during the annual fair (last two weeks of August).

Superintendent must take part in pre-fair meetings and activities to get their area prepared for fair week.

Review and provide recommended updates the HCFA Exhibitor Guide as needed.

Responsible for activities related to Youth and Open sheep, swine, beef, and goat shows for the annual Humboldt County Fair.

Attend superintendent meetings and livestock committee meetings.

Coordinate all activities of project area during the fair period within the policies, rules, and guidelines established in the fair book, and those established by the Livestock Committee and Fair Board.

Supervise and update the project area and fair guidelines.

Secure clerks and judges for the show, and present draft contracts to C.E.O for approval.

Must be available during the year to answer questions from members and leaders regarding project area guidelines.

Provide project area evaluation after fair and make recommendations of changes to the rules, show, and fair book to the C.E.O and HCFA Livestock Committee.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS/BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Superintendents need to be familiar with the project area as listed in the Fair Exhibitor book.

Superintendents should be prepared for entry day by finding out the number of entries and planning accordingly. This includes but is not limited to identifying the number of classes, necessary ribbon orders, special awards and necessary materials.

Superintendents need to provide the Building and Grounds Committee and C.E.O. with a list of what needs to be completed in their barn and/or project areas along with a list of materials needed to complete the job annually no later than June 1st. (Fair Board approval may be required).

Superintendents are responsible for coordination of paid staff and volunteers to complete work that needs to be completed in their barn and/or project area before, during, and after the fair.

Coordinate and assign designated livestock camping spaces for junior livestock entries.

Superintendents are required to provide staffing schedules and ensure that temporary employees take required meal breaks.

Superintendents are responsible for the overall organization, coordination, and supervision of their project area, including developing consistency between projects areas objectives and fair exhibition and judging.

Superintendents are responsible to make sure the project area, guidelines, workshops, publications, etc. do not discriminate against fair exhibitors.

Submit all required paperwork on time to the C.E.O. or their designee. This includes but is not limited to work schedules, award lists, and related reports.

Monitor fairgrounds facilities used for the project area to ensure that buildings, grounds, - and equipment are safe, secure, well-lit, working properly, adequate, clean, painted, etc.

Regularly monitor the projects to ensure all are appropriately displayed for public viewing. Check for cleanliness, care, disease, spoilage, damage, wilting, etc.

Manage conflicts that arise in the project area and consult with C.E.O. or Livestock Committee members (livestock superintendents) as appropriate.

When appropriate, educate the questioning person(s) why decisions were made.

LIVESTOCK SUPERINTENDENT

The Livestock Superintendent may attend Livestock and Jr. Livestock Auction Committee meetings.

Superintendent, or their designee, are responsible to coordinate livestock display area.

Superintendents are responsible to fairly assign cages, pens, or stalls, and provide a diagram to illustrate those locations and assignments if necessary. Superintendents are to be present during animal check-in to check for sick, diseased and/or other required regulations of animals are being followed before they are penned.

For project areas with a sale, superintendents will coordinate weigh-in with the Livestock Committee (communication of the Superintendent and assistants need to ensure the proper weights are met and recorded).

The superintendent will make decision on whether the animal meets the HCFA Fair Book rules for weight, horns, test papers, etc., with consultation with Livestock Committee members as appropriate.

Following the last weigh-in, Superintendents will divide the exhibitors into weight class and showmanship classes and post them in the barn.

Showmanship classes may need to be broken, depending on the number of exhibitors, thus having multiple classes within a division. All breaks for showmanship must be made using birthdates.

If applicable, Superintendents must secure an announcer for all shows of their species. Qualified announcers should be familiar with how the show works and the requirements for the department. Superintendents should go over the names of the exhibitors with the announcer to ensure they are pronounced properly.

Superintendents will be provided ribbons and other recognition items from the Fair Office. Superintendents should have their ribbons and trophies organized before the show.

As necessary, coordinate and assist with auction and sale order, load-outs and trucking of sale animals with Jr. Livestock Auction Committee members.

Superintendents have the authority to make decisions of what to do in case of a disagreement of where a pen/stall assignments, and questionable care of an animal by an exhibitor.

Large animal sale superintendents must turn-in their completed Sale List to the Livestock Committee Secretary as soon as possible after numbers are assigned. Sale order includes exhibitor names and club names, weights, and tag numbers and that weights and tag numbers are accurate.

Superintendents must be sure that exhibitors have a photo taken with their project animal at the appointed time during their show.

Education and Experience:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Employees work in outdoor and indoor environments with moderate noise levels, moderate temperature conditions, and occasionally exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing Association policies and procedures.

Work is indoors and outdoors.

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risk that require following basic safety precautions.

Outdoor work may involve some exposure to weather conditions.

Expose to farm animals, dust, dirt, and unpleasant odors.

Moves objects at least 30 pounds.

Works a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
