Job Summary

The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a diverse scientific organization that provides a broad and innovative research and development backplane for a growing space enterprise. This Project Leader, Research Engineer role would work with multiple special-program customers and across engineering and science divisions to integrate research activities, assemble/lead teams, and develop success roadmaps for necessary R&D for game changing technology. This new position in the Research and Technology Collaboration Office of the Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports multiple national security space customers for top priority programs essential to both the Intelligence Community and Defense Department. The candidate will lead and manage common technical needs through team leadership and program office outreach, and he/she will be responsible for the integration of teams to support unique Aerospace concept-to-prototype opportunities. An innovative, versatile and self-motivated individual will make a big impact in the emerging field of space survivability and the supporting technology development.

This full-time position will be a hybrid work model, nominally based in El Segundo, with consideration in Chantilly, VA or Colorado Springs, CO.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Integrate PSL-wide research with other ETG engineering teams to develop a "product focus" directed toward multi-customer current and future needs, with specific focus on special customer research associated with space resiliency
  • Working with other scientist and engineers, form roadmaps for "use cases" of R&D research across the portfolio and find customers for successful technology adoption
  • Connect modeling and simulation efforts across ETG with research focus areas
  • In collaboration with research teams, identify and codify prototype opportunities by building larger ETG teams including research, engineering, modeling and simulation, and program management
  • Establish and lead high-performing ETG teams across multiple divisions and potentially geographic locations
  • Manage portfolio of resources and tasks associated with special access program interests and reach-back activities, monitoring and ensuring progress across multiple research areas
  • Collaborate as key leader across all three PSL sub-divisions. Collaborations should extend across ETG as necessary, in particular, to xLab with prototyping activities and project management activities
  • Provide regular communications with management and customer regarding program status and technology risk areas

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, aerospace, mechanical, electrical or equivalent
  • Typically, 8 or more years of engineering team leadership, prototype development and technical leadership associated with space hardware and resiliency R&D
  • Leadership skills to include: team-building and budget and resource planning Ability to work outside personal expertise areas to cultivate new ideas across PSL
  • Knowledge and experience on space domain awareness, space resiliency, and technologies to "outpace the threat"
  • Ability for occasional travel within US, typically one trip per month
  • This position requires a current and active TS/SCI security clearance with counter-intelligence polygraph, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Ph.D or equivalent in science or engineering from a recognized institution , with experience in developing unique end-to-end technical expertise
  • Experience with integrated ground and/or space system engineering with in-depth knowledge of one or more technical engineering areas
  • Significant experience and demonstrated success working with a matrixed engineering organization in technical areas outside personal expertise
  • Program Office experience working directly with contractors and government customers

We offer a competitive compensation package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business. The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
