Job Description

As a member of the Exelixis Medical Affairs Department, the Medical Affairs Advisory Boards Director will serve as an advisory board subject matter expert and assist the Senior Director (Medical Affairs Advisory Boards) with the management and oversight of the Exelixis Medical Affairs National Advisory Board platform. This individual will also assist the Senior Director with the development and execution of an overall national advisory board plan for Exelixis marketed products and pipeline agents across a variety of pertinent tumor types. As the “Exelixis Responsible Person or ERP”, he/she will lead identification of appropriate advisors, development of objectives/agenda for individual advisory board meetings, and execution of designated advisory board meetings in the annual plan. The role will include management of external agency/vendor partners engaged to execute the plan. The Medical Affairs Advisory Board Director will work cross-functionally to ensure the national advisory board plan and relevant individual advisory board meetings meet medical and business objectives and are performed in a compliant manner. Collaboration with Medical Affairs colleagues, especially Medical Director(s), as well as colleagues in other departments, including but not limited to Commercial, Legal, and Compliance, is required. This role may be located in our corporate office in Alameda, CA or remote.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the Senior Director in the development and maintenance of the strategic Medical Annual Advisory Board Plan portion of the overall Exelixis Annual Advisory Board Plan and obtain Legal and Compliance approval. Assist in the hiring of agency/vendor partner(s) to assist with execution of the Annual Advisory Board Plan. Serve as the “Exelixis Responsible Person” and execute in alignment with the approved Medical Affairs Annual Advisory Board Plan to carry out designated individual advisory board meetings at the national level. Occasionally oversee ad hoc global advisory boards. In collaboration with Medical Affairs colleagues and other key internal colleagues, identify advisors, clinical presenter, and moderator for designated individual advisory board meetings. Develop agenda, objectives, slide deck, top line results, and executive summaries for each designated individual advisory board meeting. Develop and maintain knowledge of the evolving treatment landscape and medical practice for tumor types of importance to Exelixis, including understanding of clinical data for Exelixis products and competitors. Develop content as needed. Ensure the appropriate documentation of advisory board (and related, i.e., “Roundtable”) activities within the Exelixis tracking tool. Participate as a member of Medical Affairs, as well as cross-functional strategic teams, to ensure advisory board meetings meet overarching business objectives. Assist in business planning and budgeting exercises as they apply to advisory boards. Assist as needed with non-advisory board Medical Affairs activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directing work only (no direct reports, but directing work to a CMO, Consultant or 3rd party.)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education: Master’s degree in a clinical/medical or scientific discipline and 10 years of experience; or, Doctorate degree (PhD, PharmD) in a clinical/medical or scientific discipline and 8+ years of experience

Experience/The Ideal Candidate will have: Minimum 5 years’ experience in a scientific/medical discipline within the pharmaceutical/biotechnology arena. Prior experience in advisory board planning and execution required. Demonstrated track record of advisory board execution. Expertise in the oncology field. Insight into the ever-evolving oncology treatment landscape. Solid understanding of how to appropriately leverage evidence, including that of Exelixis compounds and other treatments, to maximize feedback and advice from advisors. Working knowledge of regulatory, legal, and compliance issues relevant to the execution of advisory boards. Ability to assist in the execution of the advisory board plan in a compliant manner consistent with Exelixis Compliance/Legal requirements.

Knowledge/Skills:

Strong science/medical capabilities. Solid understanding of disease states, Exelixis products, and competitive landscapes. Ability to keep abreast of the constantly evolving treatment landscape pertinent to disease states of interest. Ability to effectively manage/direct individuals not in a direct reporting relationship, e.g., agency/vendor. Strong project management abilities (contracting, budgeting, vendor management) essential. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects including budget. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and influence within a matrix environment leading teams/personnel without direct reporting responsibility. Experience partnering with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Commercial, Compliance, Legal, and other departments. Self-starter who can work independently and deal with complex issues related to internal and external stakeholders with minimal supervision. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Significant cross-functional collaboration to meet business needs while simultaneously ensuring advisory boards are planned and conducted in a compliant manner. Communicates and interacts with national and global medical experts. Oversees vendor/agency partners to ensure impactful execution of advisory boards. Exercises independent judgment in the planning of advisory boards and ensures appropriate internal and external communication. Keeps abreast of the changing treatment landscape for multiple tumor types and insight into the impact that landscape might have on Exelixis products.
