Job Description

Exelixis is seeking an experienced Patent Agent (Biologics) to join the Legal Department’s IP team, reporting to the Senior Corporate Counsel, Patents. You will be an integral member of the Legal Department and IP team, having the opportunity to operate independently in a dynamic environment to support the growing biologics patent needs of Exelixis. You will work collaboratively with various teams across the organization, including Business Development, Alliance Management, Biotherapeutics Discovery, and others, as well as with external counsel.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications and working closely with outside counsel to prosecute international patent applications. Collaborating with scientists and other technical personnel to understand new inventions and to implement drafting and prosecution strategies to ensure appropriate patent protection. Conducting searches and providing analyses to support freedom-to-operate, infringement, invalidity, and other opinions. Providing key business leaders with intelligence on competitor’s patent activities. Assisting product teams in navigating complex patent landscapes. Assisting in-house counsel with patent portfolio management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory responsibilities

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:Education: Must be admitted in good standing to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. Advanced degree required: Master’s in molecular/cellular biology, immunology, pharmacology, or related scientific discipline and a minimum of six years related experience; or, PhD in molecular/cellular biology, immunology, pharmacology, or related scientific discipline and three to five years related experience. J.D. for attorney applicant and membership in good standing of a state bar, preferably California is a plus

Experience: Patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house legal environment. Experience in scientific research and/or clinical trials is beneficial. Experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries is helpful. Experience in drug patent portfolio management a plus.

Knowledge/Skills: Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills and must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to implement organizational or team objectives. Ability to develop creative technical and/or business solutions for complex problems and implement organizational or team objectives. Must be efficient, detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and with the ability to re-prioritize on short time frames. Acts responsibly and conscientiously. Works under pressure to meet specific deadlines. Works independently and in a team environment. Dedicated to quality, reliability, and highest professional standards in all work tasks. Must be a self-starter and quick learner. Must have good judgment.
