Project Engineer - AviationOverview: The Project Engineer will be responsible for the design, coordination, and technical execution of aviation and airfield infrastructure projects. This position involves leading the preparation of construction documents, coordinating with various stakeholders, and ensuring project compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of airfield design, FAA guidelines, and civil engineering principles. Responsibilities:
Lead the preparation of construction plans, contract documents, specifications, reports, and preliminary cost estimates.
Assist in developing project scopes, fee proposals, and budgets.
Coordinate and participate in meetings with Sponsors, FAA, and stakeholders, preparing agendas, schedules, and minutes.
Review client-provided documents (e.g., as-builts, design reports, surveys) and manage subconsultant activities (e.g., surveys, geotechnical investigations, utility locates).
Prepare grant applications, ensure environmental compliance, and oversee the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program.
Analyze geotechnical data and incorporate findings into pavement, grading, and utility designs, including FAA FAARFIELD-compliant pavement designs.
Draft contract documents, including FAA general/special provisions and Construction Safety and Phasing Plans (CSPP), and perform drainage analysis.
Submit permits (FAA Form 7460), calculate quantities, prepare cost estimates, and draft design reports and FAA modifications.
Assist with bidding processes, change orders, and supplemental agreements.
Conduct site visits, team meetings, and prepare final reports, as-built drawings, and project cost summaries.
Participate in final project inspections with FAA and Sponsors.
Provide technical input and guidance to junior staff, collaborate on project teams, and independently design systems and processes.
Manage multiple projects or major portions of larger projects, assisting with proposals and contributing to quality assurance initiatives.
Potentially serve as a field engineer during construction.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
5+ years of related industry experience in the aviation and airfield design.
Professional Engineer (PE) license, with a preference for California PE.
Demonstrated capability to perform the essential duties of the position.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret scientific, technical, financial, and legal documents.
Proficiency in advanced mathematical concepts (e.g., exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience working with internal teams, clients, and regulatory agencies.
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and industry-related software.
Expertise in AutoDesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD software.
Familiarity with FAA Advisory Circulars is a plus.
Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally perform physical activities such as reaching, bending, climbing, or lifting up to 40 pounds.
