742900 Pre/Post Op SurgExpectations:
Responsible for coordination of care to meet identified needs of the patient/family. Supervises the management of patient care utilizing critical thinking and nursing process, discharge planning, resource identification, linking and scheduling patients with required services, monitoring care delivery, advocating for the patient, care planning and evaluating outcomes. Coordinates patient care across the health care continuum, and assists other team members with meeting individual patient needs.The SDS Nurse provides quality nursing care to meet the needs of the pre and postoperative patient, including discharge for Day Surgery patients having surgery in the main OR or a procedure in the Special Procedure Room within the unit.This position may require flexibility of hours.Education:For hires prior to 9/1/15, Graduate from accredited nursing program required.For internal promotions or for hires on 9/1/15 and thereafter, BSN preferred or must be currently enrolled in a BSN or MSN program & degree must be completed within 3 years of DOH or date of transition to an RN position.Diploma or transcripts on highest degree earned required.Experience/Training:Minimum 1 year of current experience in acute care area of expertise/equivalent service area required, 2 years preferred.Must challenge and successfully pass the Basic Dysrhythmia course curriculum within 21 days of hire. Basic computer skills/experience with computerized documentation systems required.Licenses/Certifications:Current active unrestricted RN license issued by State of California.Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS and PALS Provider required.RN-BC or related certification, preferredSkills:Good communications skills, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to utilize critical thinking.Additional Unit Specific Essential Functions:1. Ensures each patient's readiness for surgery/procedure via a thorough assessment and reporting abnormal findings to the surgeon and anesthesiologist.2. Utilizes steps in the "Universal Protocol" to verify patient identification, surgical procedure to be done, and site marking.3. Provide intraprocedural care for patients having a procedure within the unit, including Sedation/Analgesia with appropriate monitoring, maintenance of the sterile field, and the "Time Out".4. Provides postoperative monitoring for Day Surgery patients, establishing readiness for discharge based on the SDS discharge criteria, including Aldrete Scoring and pain management.5. Provides complete and individualized discharge instructions to patients based on the procedure performed. Answers questions appropriately and includes family/care-giver accordingly.6. Maintains annual competencies and self studies. Attends a code blue drill every six months.7. Maintains basic knowledge of The Joint Commission requirements and the National Patient Safety Goals.8. Demonstrates commitment to the Customer Service standards by providing information to patients, visitors, coworkers, and physicians in a friendly, helpful, courteous manner.
