Research Scientist – Molecular/Microbiology| Contract | San Diego, CA | $48/hr | The job is for a research scientist at a startup company developing a molecular detection device for rapid and portable detection of microbes. The candidate will be responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing experiments to develop nucleic acid amplification assays for bacterial detection system, as well as managing lab space, data, and supplies. The candidate will also have the opportunity to work closely with the executive team, supervise a laboratory technician, and provide input on the research direction and product development.Job Responsibilities:

Independently design, execute, analyze and troubleshoot experiments to demonstrate feasibility of new assays and products

Develop nucleic acid amplification assays

Identify genetic target sequences for primer development

Grow and maintain bacterial cell cultures.

Optimize assay conditions to achieve commercial levels of stability and performance

Identify creative approaches to solve problems and improve methods.

Process and analyze research data, create high quality research reports, and produce report updates

Design and maintain appropriate research data storage and reporting systems

Order required lab supplies and manage a research budget

Manage assigned lab space, adhere to safety regulations, and perform proper data management practices

Perform field testing of assays

Supervise a laboratory technician

Provide input and decide on broad research directions

Work closely with, and communicate research findings to, the executive team

Qualifications:

PhD or Masters in molecular biology, or related (Bachelors may suffice with additional 5 years of research experience)

Basic bioinformatics experience

Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing timelines in a fast-paced startup environmentn- Must be willing to work on site 5 days a week

Knowledge/skills:

Familiarity with molecular assay development, including nucleic acid amplification and primer design

Work with bacteria, maintaining bacterial cultures up to BSL2

Familiarity with basic biostatistics

Experience working with genetic material

Work independently as well as in a team environment
