Job Description

Under direction, the Sheet Metal Supervisor I supervises the work of Sheet Metal Workers. The essential functions of the Sheet Metal Supervisor I include: planning, organizing, directing and controlling the work of a crew of subordinate workers engaged in sheet metal fabrication, modification, repair, and/or installation; participating in the actual work of the trade, when needed; maintaining time records, work requisitions and material supply logs; estimating labor and material costs; recommending the selection and purchase of sheet metal tools and materials; supervising the storage, care and maintenance of various tools and materials; providing instruction on safety methods and procedures; and explaining details of projects to prospective customers or tenants.

Essential Functions include:1. Plans, organizes, directs, and controls the work of sheet metal workers and others engaged in various aspects of the trade.2. Maintains time records, work requisitions, and material supply logs for the purpose of tracking workflow.3. Estimates the labor and material costs of sheet metal fabrication, modification, repair, and/or installation for the purpose of maximizing efficiency and minimizing costs.4. Recommends the selection and purchase of various sheet metal tools and materials.5. Requisitions tools and materials for various sheet metal work assignments.6. Supervises the storage, care and maintenance of various tools and materials.7. Provides instruction on safety methods and procedures for the purpose of creating and maintaining a safe work environment.8. Participates in actual work of the trade when needed.9. Meets with prospective customers to explain details of projects.10. Drives city vehicles to various work sites to oversee work of Sheet Metal Workers.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:|1.Ten years experience as a journey-level sheet metal worker ;OR2.Five years experience as a journey-level sheet metal worker ;AND3.Completion of a recognized sheet metal worker's apprenticeship program (in the Building Trades or Shipyard Sheet Metal Apprentice Programs)

LICENSE:
California driver's license

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Nature of work requires working out in the field at a variety of job sites and under potentially hazardous conditions, such as in and around raw sewage, at great heights, in all weather conditions, in cramped or enclosed areas, lifting heavy equipment and materials. Work shifts may vary and may include weekend and night work.

GENERAL NOTES:1. One-year of full-time equivalent is considered equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine fulltime employment.2. A valid out-of-state driver's license is acceptable during the application process.3. Applicants must meet minimum qualification requirements by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

Minimum Qualifications Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying):

Candidates will be prompted to complete the Minimum Qualifications Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's qualifications in relation to the minimum qualifications for this position. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications for Class 9345.

Written Examination (Weight: 100%):

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a written examination to assess their knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of sheet metal practices and procedures, tools and materials used in the trade, cost estimation practices; safety practices and procedures including CAL-OSHA regulations and applicable sections of the City's Safety Rule Book; ability to: perform supervisory responsibilities; prepare and maintain accurate records and reports; human relations and written communication ability.

Qualified candidates will be notified via email of the exact time, date, and location of the examination.

Candidates that participate in the Written examination must achieve a passing score in order to be placed and ranked on the eligible list. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.

Eligible List/Score Report:A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be

Pre-Employment and Selection Information:

1. MEDICAL EXAMINATION:Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential function of this job.

2. MEDICAL TESTING:Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully complete the TB testing Process.

SECURITY CLEARANCES AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS:Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment in this classification. DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT:Applicants for positions in this classification, who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by Local 261,are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive function positions for six months after the date of the positive test.
