Shared responsibility in the cloud. The vendor will handle configuration and execution tasks, while the DBA is responsible for adjusting the backup routines and schedule to meet application needs and validation. • Monitoring: Enabling monitoring of critical DB indicators such as CPU and memory utilization, disk I/O, Long run SQLs, DB Health, Database events, Deadlocks etc. Make use of Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring, CloudWatch to get insights on the DB activity. Act when these events occur • Performance Tuning: Tune DB engine parameters to meet Application Use Case and yield maximum performance. Fine tuning DB schema and queries to minimize query time. Table defragmentation, re-indexing and modifying database structure, etc • Prod Data Fix: Fixing inconsistency in Production databases causing application outage/performance degradation. Database Availability: Ensuring cluster is set for automatic failover and can handle an AZ failure. • System patching and maintenance: Regular maintenance as needed for critical security and system availability updates as planned on or before the deadline date of Releases. • System provisioning: Provisioning database system and allocate compute, memory, and storage resources to workloads. • Capacity planning: Continuous collaboration with application development and end users to forecast system usage and resource requirements. Adjust the cloud service tiers to accommodate required capacity growth. • Debugging: Collaborates with application development to identify/reproduce and remediate issues in lower environments, and then promote to production. • Automation: Working with infrastructure-as-code; Terraform and/or CloudFormation as applicable to the application. • Recommendations: DBA recommends areas where applications can improve their implementations to avoid or eliminate anti-patterns which are the root cause of systemic/underlying issues Qualifications • BE/BS in Computer Science or related field or an equivalent combination of education or experience, Master’s Degree preferred. • 8 to 12 years of experience in information technology, with at least 8 years of experience as a DBA and 4 years of exp as Cloud / Apps DBA • DBA, Database Engineer, or similar role (8 +Years) with experience in engineering, administering, and managing cloud hosted databases • Well versed with both SQL and No-SQL Database technologies • Coding skills in the procedural language for at least one database engine a must (PL/SQL etc.) • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and interface with all levels within the organization. • Broad awareness of customer workloads and use cases, including performance, availability and scalability. • Working knowledge of relational database internals (locking, consistency, serialization, recovery paths). • Build and maintain complex mission-critical production database systems. • Support day-to-day operations and management of an enterprise-level development, testing and production database management systems. • Deploy, configure, manage, and test installations, upgrades, replication, backup and recovery of current databases. • Hands-on experience with AWS services (Elastic Search, Lambda, S3, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, Athena, Kinesis, AWS Glue, AWS Data Pipeline, API Gateway, Python Scripting) Experience. • Analyze issues holistically, from the application tier through the database, down to the storage. • Debug issues by collaborating with application developers to identify/reproduce and remediate issues. Reproduce production issues in lower environments through creation of suitable test-cases. • Recommend areas where applications can improve their implementations to avoid or eliminate anti-patterns which are the root cause of systemic/underlying issues. • Automate capabilities using infrastructure-as-code in Terraform and CloudFormation. • Working with AWS Services: S3, EC2, EBS, etc. • Leverage good coding/scripting skills to automate tasks and improve workload analysis mechanisms. Leverage good communication skills to document and create runbooks, wikis, etc.
