FPGA Engineer: FPGA implementation (VHDL dev ideally w/ Vivado) req; signal processing preferred (wireless comm: G2G, airborne, satcom, etc.)

Key member of the development of digital signal processing related VHDL for use in communication datalink systems and other programs as required.

The job includes all areas of VHDL development including creating requirements for VHDL designs, selection of host programmable devices (FPGA or other), simulation/modeling of VHDL design (we use Matlab), implementation of design and hardware testing onto host FPGA, test of overall communication system, and documentation of the design.

Previous work experience in VHDL design mandatory. Knowledge of FPGA design environments, including ISE, Vivado, EDK, Modelsim and Matlab a plus. The role includes close liaison with the project engineering team. Performs complex electrical engineering duties following designated standards and procedures. Works closely with engineering disciplines. Duties require application of engineering principles and techniques. May supervise subordinate engineering staff and lead design efforts. This job requires strong analytical and technical abilities and demands fast, but carefully thought-out results. Strong leadership and control of the work process from beginning to end is necessary. This position typically works under limited supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position regularly exercise discretionary and substantial decision-making.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepares design specifications, analyses, and recommendations.
  • Prepares design and operation objectives, specifications, and resource needs.
  • Recommends test control, strategies, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Supports the interfaces with customers, contractors, and marketing vendors.
  • Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
  • Conducts in-house design reviews and technical meetings.
  • Prepares design proposal to reflect cost, schedule, and technical approaches.
  • Monitors project status and progress.
  • Manages budget and schedule for electrical engineering tasks.
  • Keeps abreast of improvements in electronic engineering techniques.
  • Log, compile, and evaluate engineering data.
  • Analyze equipment to establish operating data.
  • Develop logic flowcharts and block diagrams.
  • May support on-site installation activities.
  • May give work assignments and check the work of technicians or design support personnel on a common project.
  • May provide technical direction and guidance to Design Engineers, Technicians, or Design Support personnel assigned to work on a common project.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and problem-solving skills are necessary.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • This job is at a cleared facility, candidates must hold U.S. Citizenship and be able to obtain a security clearance
  • 4 year college degree in electronic engineering or science discipline PLUS 5+ years experience OR an applicable Master of Science degree PLUS 3+ years of related experience.
  • Might consider relevant experience in lieu of education.
    • FPGA implementation including

      VDHL development
      • Knowledge of FPGA design environments, including ISE, Vivado (preferred), EDK, Modelsim and Matlab a plus
      • Experience in the following:
        • Helping creating requirements for VHDL designs
        • Selection of host programmable devices (FPGA or other)
        • Simulation / modeling of VHDL design (we use Matlab)
        • Implementation of design and hardware testing onto host FPGA
        • Test of overall communication system
        • Documentation of the design.
      • Experience in designing, developing, and testing RTL.
    • Experience / knowledge of signal processing is helpful/preferred (wireless communications: satcom, airborne, ground-to-ground, radio comm, point-to-point, multi-point, etc.)
      • This role is NOT responsible for algorithm development for signal processing, but will coordinate on those design sessions
  • Knowledge of customer needs and competing products.
  • Mental ability to perform analytical work.
  • Ability to prioritize work, complete multiple tasks and work under deadlines.
  • Ability to use typical office automation products such as word processors and spreadsheets.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • May be required to travel domestically and internationally including working odd hours, in-line with customer requirements.
