This facility provides world-leading scientific capabilities to a global user community, covering a broad research portfolio that includes the development of advanced materials and chemical catalysts for clean energy systems, drug discovery for modern pharmaceuticals, and fundamental processes in cell biology.We are seeking a candidate to fill the position of Staff Engineer. The successful candidate will help drive a dynamic and exciting environment, collaborating with a diverse team of scientists and engineers developing state-of-the-art facilities at the interface of hard x-ray laminography and cryogenic electron tomography.Your specific responsibilities include:

Collaborate closely with the engineering and scientific staff at SSRL (primarily the Weker and Dahlberg labs) to develop hardware and control systems for advanced scientific imaging experiments in both hard x-ray laminography and cryogenic electron tomography modalities. This role includes formulating concepts of operations using engineering principles to ensure the final product is dependable, available, and maintainable.

Oversee the execution and delivery of new optical, optomechanical, mechanical, vacuum, and cryogenic systems.

Lead the detailed design, procurement, installation, alignment, integration, and validation of these systems, providing engineering support for ongoing operations, maintenance, and upgrades.

Document the designs and develop a training and operations support plan that ensures high uptime and ease of repair.

Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication and present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

Bachelor¿s degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and minimum 2-year experience in the following areas:

Computer programming in any of the following languages, Matlab, Python, C, and Labview.

Optical design and construction

Cryogenic electron microscopy

Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.

The ability to work well with colleagues at SLAC and external organizations.

Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.

Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

Ability to apply sound judgment in challenging and multi-tasking situations and be able to work independently with only general guidance.

Master¿s degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field

The expected pay range for this position is $116,000 - $170,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
