Overview

Under the direction of the Health Services Administrator (HSA), Program Manager (PM), or higher licensed medical professional, the Substance Abuse Counselor will work in close collaboration with physicians and other health care personnel in the evaluation and treatment of patient population. The Substance Abuse Counselor will provide treatment and support to assist patients receiving care in their recovery from addictions, such as alcoholism, drug addiction, mental disorders, eating disorders, or other behavioral problems.

Qualifications

Education:
  • High School and specialized training for licensing/certification(s).

Experience:
  • At least one year of experience providing treatment to individuals with substance abuse disorder within a correctional facility

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current (and must maintain) unrestricted license or certificate in state of practice
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS/ACLS certification through AHA
Responsibilities

  1. Provide assessments, treatment planning, and counseling for substance abuse program clients
  2. Provide education, consultation services, and training for other staff, community agencies, and the public
  3. Perform prevention activities designed to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the County
  4. Works in close collaboration with physicians and other health care personnel in the evaluation and treatment to further their understanding of significant social and emotional factors underlying patient's substance abuse health problem
  5. Completes comprehensive assessment timely of admission and coordinates information with team to effectively plan treatment
  6. Locates and/or develops self-help and support groups for clients, families and significant others
  7. Provides on- call crisis response and intervention services
  8. Maintains compliance with all applicable practice standards and guidelines
  9. Maintains client confidentiality and adherence to HIPAA requirement
  10. Helps patient and family to understand, accept, and follow substance abuse recommendations
  11. Maintains a professional relationship with county staff and healthcare team
  12. Document all findings in patient's health record providing written summaries of all patient encourters, including but not limited to history, diagnosis and treatment course or other documentation requirements as outlined by Wellpath and Facility
  13. May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff
  14. May assist in orientation and training of new employees
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
