DescriptionJob summaryAWS Backup simplifies the automation to backup resources by offering a cost-effective, fully managed, policy-based service that enables data protection at scale. AWS Backup helps our customers support their regulatory compliance obligations and meet their business continuity goals. We are looking for a Systems Development Engineer to scale and automate this fast-growing service. If you're enthusiastic about infrastructure as code, helping customers protect and manage petabytes of data in thousands of accounts across the globe, then we are the team for you. You will have the opportunity to build and scale distributed systems that some of the largest companies rely on, and grow your technical skills and expertise while working closely with all the different data stores in AWS, from storage volumes to databases and file systems. We are building a new group taking on exciting challenges based in the Bay Area, and this is an opportunity to be part of the founding group that will help define the culture and direction of the team.Work/Life BalanceOur team puts a high value on work-life balance. We allow the flexibility to regularly work from home and from either the East Palo Alto or San Francisco office with only an occasional need to meet in person as a team. AWS Backup has adapted well to the current pandemic where the entire team is working fully remotely until circumstances change. We generally keep core hours from 10am to 4pm.On-Call ResponsibilityOn-call responsibilities typically for one week every 2-3 months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.Mentorship & Career GrowthThe larger AWS Backup team is dedicated to supporting new team members. We have a broad mix of experience levels (from college hires through 20+ years in the industry!), and we actively foster an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy growing junior engineers through one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but empathetic, code/design reviews. We value diversity, and actively recruit engineers from non-traditional background. We care deeply about your career growth. Each team member is explicitly assigned tasks that are designed to challenge them in an effective way without being overwhelming. We strongly believe in sustained and continuous gains in experience leading to well-rounded engineers.Inclusive Team CultureHere at AWS, we embrace our differences and are committed to furthering our culture of inclusion. We have ten employee-led affinity groups, reaching 40,000 employees in over 190 chapters globally. We have innovative benefit offerings, and host annual and ongoing learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences. Amazon’s culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust. We’re looking for a new teammate who is enthusiastic, empathetic, curious, motivated, reliable, and able to work effectively with a diverse team of peers; someone who will help us amplify the positive & inclusive team culture we’ve been building.BASIC QUALIFICATIONSProgramming experience with at least one modern language such as C, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
