Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides sub-professional dental work assisting dentist in the care and treatment of dental patients. Functions both as dental chair and office assistant. Assists the Dental Chair by passing instruments, preparing compounds, and assisting with taking x-rays and impressions. Assists with office functions by scheduling appointments and preparing patient records.

Under direct supervision, provides sub-professional dental work assisting pediatric dentists in the care and treatment of infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs.This position will incorporate both chair-side and office assistant assignments. Duties in the dental clinic include individual and team responsibilities. Dental assisting includes treatment room management and sterilization, mixing dental materials, obtaining radiographs, and taking impressions. Dental assisting will encompass surgical procedures and behavior management in the dental clinic as well as in the operating room.Office assistant functions will include scheduling appointments, patient records management and inventory management

Responsibilities

1.Provides chair side assistance to the pediatric dentist in the examination and treatment of Pediatric aged and special needs patients. This will include restorative and rehabilitation services, orthodontics, space maintenance, endodontics, oral surgery, and other dental procedures.

2.Greets, seats, and rooms patients immediately, reviews Health History, takes x-rays with good visibility and contrast, expected to have dental set-up ready when dentist enters room, performs special treatment procedures, organizes and has operatory stocked with needed dental instruments & materials.

3.Sterilizes all dental instruments, handpieces, and counter-tops, & operatories.

4.Cares for dental equipment according to manufactures directions.

5.Follows guidelines of hospital policy for infection control.

6.Assists in the administration of the recall system.

7.Maintains patient records and indicates the type of work done.

8.Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Knowledge of filling compounds such as composites and amalgam. 2. Knowledge of patient record maintenance procedures. 3. Knowledge of safety guidelines. 4. Skill in placing and positioning suction tubes in patients. 5. Excellent customer service skills. 6. Ability to follow Dentist's instructions. 7. Ability to schedule patients using in-house scheduling software. 8. Ability to calm patient when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1.Provides chair side assistance to the pediatric dentist to ensure effective implementation of four-handed dentistry principles.

2.Monitors and manages inventory and dental supplies as needed.

3.Knowledge of preparing dental materials.

4.Keep dental units organized, ready, stocked, and clean.

5.Oversees cleanliness and disinfection of treatment rooms.

6.Sterilizes all dental instruments and handpieces.

7.Implements the preventative maintenance/cleaning of dental equipment according to manufactures directions.

8.Assists in maintaining dental office emergency kits and nitrous and oxygen tanks.

9.Promptly sends out and monitors all laboratory cases and follows laboratory procedures according to office protocol.

10.Follows guidelines of hospital policy for infection control.

11.Ability to function as an enthusiastic, caring and compassionate individual who enjoys working with children of all ages and patients with special needs care.

12.Monitors patient flow and assists in scheduling patients for re-visit appointments.

13.Maintains patient records and indicates the type of work done.

14.Be an active participant in team meetings.

Computers and Technology

1.Experience with electronic dental health records/software

Certificates, Licenses and Registration

1.Current BLS required.

2.A certificate of compliance with the required radiation safety examination issued by the State Board of Dental Examiners required.

Education

Education 1. Completion of a Dental Assistant vocational curriculum from an approved school, required. Experience 1. One year of experience providing chair side assistance to a dentist in the examination and treatment of patients, preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) from American Heart Association (Required) Certifications and Licenses 1. Certificate of compliance with the required radiation safety examination issued by the State Board of Dental Examiners, preferred. 2. Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider Certification/CPR, required.
