Meet with each student one-on-one approximately 5 times per year to review progress and create learning goals

Meet with students as needed for additional coaching or counseling

Address immediate student issues, including off hours concerns in emergent situations in conjunction with the Office of Student Life (OSL)

Document all meetings with students

Maintain close communication with the Office of Student Life around students concerns; utilizing OSL and appropriate campus referral sources as needed

Write letters of recommendation for curricular, post-graduate, and extra-curricular opportunities

Work with the Office of Student Life in crafting the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) for students applying to residency positions

Support students in their application for residency and provide academic/career advising

During years that your students are 1st and 3rd year students:

During years that your students are 2nd and 4th year students:

Participate in grading notes and oral presentations for the Clinical Performance Exam (Standardized Patient exam) that occurs after the core clinical year

Participate in grading notes and oral presentations that students complete as part of the work during the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships

The Trek Progress Committee oversees student progress through the curriculum.

Attend Trek Progress Committee meetings only on an as needed basis if your students are under discussion.

Contribute background knowledge about student progress.

Participate in devising and implementing remediation plans for your students

Attend 1st year medical student orientation; expected one full day commitment and one half-day commitment

Work with 4th year student leaders in the Physician as Advisor course to support work of the student co-directors in to planning/executing college events

Attend faculty development sessions Wednesday morning 1-2 times per month

Attend yearly COMPASS Program retreat

Attend just-in-time faculty development sessions preceding afternoon small group facilitation

Faculty will receive bi-annual evaluations by their assigned students. Additional feedback will be provided on performance from Office of Student Life, Evaluation and Assessment, and Curriculum stakeholders.

Prior medical student teaching experience at any institution for two years or more.

Prior experience with coaching

Demonstrate an interest in medical student education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Program management and coordination skills.

Ability to communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, and leadership team members.

Organizational skills and attention to detail are important.

The individual in this position needs to be a person who can cultivate relationships with both university and community physicians, as well as students, and be available to answer questions and problem-solve as needed.

The individual must enjoy working with students, providing advice on how to troubleshoot/resolve issues, and assisting students to ensure their success.

In order to support students in maximizing their professional and personal development, each student in the Trek curriculum is paired with a faculty COMPASS Guide for all four, or more, years of their medical school career. The COMPASS Guide will serve as a longitudinal coach for student development and as a dedicated teacher for their students for in portions of the Trek curriculum. Each Guide will work with a total of approximately 20 students (taking on average 10 students per year in alternating years). COMPASS Guides will be considered core faculty in the Trek Curriculum and the primary faculty for the COMPASS Program, using their clinician-educator skills to instruct students in coaching, self-reflection, professional identity formation, utilizing feedback, promoting self-directed learning, and fostering a growth mindset. There are currently a total of 36 Guides for the Trek curriculum. Guides will join an exciting community of educators that draw from faculty across specialties and clinical sites.
