Job Overview:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides medical/nursing assistance under the direction of physicians or appropriate nursing staff in the Emergency Department within their certified capabilities.

Primary Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Fully competent in primary role on unit; performs patient and family assessment and problem identification, plans care accordingly, implements and evaluates plan of care so that problems are resolved. Role includes extremity splint placement, crutch training, assist in suture set up in rooms, IV access and draws laboratory samples ordered by physician, assists RN as needed to facilitate care of patient.
  • Adheres reliably to all accepted patient safety standards. Cleans and resets up rooms according to infection control practices and helps keep up PPE supply at designated isolation ER rooms.
  • Identifies and promotes new learning around changing patient safety standards of practice.
  • Serves in advocacy role; encouraging active involvement of patient and family in their care.
  • Prioritizes patient's situations and takes appropriate action in an efficient, effective manner.
  • Makes value-added resource decision for patient care with respect to supplies, equipment and acuity of care. Restocks all areas for patient care and monitor pyxis
  • Supply and informs Director of supply order needs.
  • Keeps patients informed regarding what to expect pre/during/post procedure
  • Provides individualized patient and family education consistent with patient's learning style, readiness to learn and self-care needs
  • Evaluated the effectiveness of patient learning
  • Records pertinent clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policy or communicates to RN.
  • Adheres to federal, state and hospital rules and regulations concerning HIPAA privacy and security.
  • Follows Hospital compliance plan and policies, including the Code of Conduct.
  • Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, TJC, etc.)
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional decision making.
  • Develops professional goals and diversity of responsibilities within practice; consistent with hospital mission and goals
  • Demonstrates role awareness and seeks individualized/department specific continuing education that improves patient care or professional practice.
  • Able to express values around patient/family centered care and assists others to achieve shared understanding.
  • Active participant in quality improvement processes.
  • Participates and contributes to unit meetings and activities.
  • Identifies need to seek out additional information when needed and apply relevant findings to practice
  • Demonstrates purposeful service excellence through exceeding patient and co-worker expectations.
  • Represents the department and hospital as a dedicated, courteous and responsive employee.
  • ED specific patient assistance including professional introduction, timely triage and reassessment, complete and accurate documentation, compassionate care and a team approach to communicating patient's care and change of status.
  • Demonstrates competency and knowledge of equipment and procedures commonly performed in the ED.
  • Positively supports unit specific activities to maintain and improve quality of care. Includes monitoring of equipment status and identifying need for repairs.
  • Actively participates in department meetings with attendance of 80% or better. Read and respond appropriately to departmental email and postings. Maintains awareness of AVATAR patient satisfaction improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in departmental education. Takes initiative to identify educational needs both individually and for the department.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to concentrate and show attention to detail
  • Relatively high degree of analytical abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, Spanish preferred
  • EMT - B with IV Certification or EMT-I required
  • BLS required through American Heart Association
  • ACLS, PALS preferred
  • High school graduate
  • Some type of technical training preferred

Benefits & Compensation:

Hire-in rates of pay are based upon the relevance of years of experience, education and certifications. Our talent acquisition team will help you understand how your direct experience will be considered.

Pay range for new hires: $22.00 - $28.73 /hr.
