Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?As an Assistant Vice President of Architecture in Emerging Technology, you will lead the Technology R&D team. You will drive the exploration and development of emerging technologies and innovation opportunities across Travelers' Technology organization and will report to the VP, Emerging Technology for Travelers. You will build, manage, and develop a team of technical professionals engaged in technology research and experimentation that will enable the architects and engineers building the solutions for tomorrow. You will be expected to proactively research market trends, perform hands on evaluation and competitive assessment, understand, and inform technology strategy that supports the Travelers Promise. As a direct report to a member of the Enterprise Architecture and Emerging Technology leadership team, you will interface directly with senior technology leaders to transform our current business and technology capabilities and pave the way for best-in-class solutions. You will be a dedicated partner to senior Technology and Business leaders as you define a target state, roadmaps and identify new and emerging technologies that will transform and optimize the business. As an organizational leader, you will humbly serve and inspire a team of high-performing Architects who you will coach, mentor, and empower. As a successful candidate, you have deep expertise and ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and will exercise influence across the enterprise. You will build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to maximize opportunities and bring capabilities to scale. The Emerging Technology, Technology R&D team will be responsible for POT, POC and MVP uses of advanced technology that will support and address the hardest problems facing the insurance industry.

You will work within a community of architecture leaders, charged with establishing and evolving a unified architecture vision.

This position may be based 100% remotely or in one of our offices.Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Leads and is part of a highly-skilled and collaborative team to research, evaluate and test advanced technologies that will impact our ability to deliver critical capabilities.
  • Hands on product evaluations, and Proofs of Technology and Concept across the enterprise.
  • Design, build, and execute experiments and market studies with a strong focus on minimum viable product (MVP) and hands on evaluation of technology.
  • Organizational responsibility for a major segment of Technology Architecture in support of the "XXX" business unit
  • Works with the Senior leadership within Technology and Business to develop architecture priorities and direction to enable business imperatives
  • Displays strong thought leadership in pursuit of modern architecture principals and technology modernization
  • Drives continuous technology transformation to minimize technical debt
  • Create a partnership with Senior Software Engineering leadership
  • Looks for opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterprise
  • Defines and leads technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of new technology architecture solutions
  • Defines target state technology architecture and roadmaps
  • Ensures alignment of IT initiatives with the target state
  • Builds strong partnership with engineering to ensure proper alignment of skills with technology direction
  • Prepares and delivers comprehensive communications to convey architectural direction and how it aligns with enterprise strategy
  • Optimizes talent strategy to ensure proper mix of resources and attracts and recruits best talent
  • Continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness of the architecture
  • Clearly evaluates and articulates how the impact of technology research and experimentation connects to our priorities.
  • Present technology recommendations to senior leadership, architecture, and engineering partners; including impact, effort, and value.
  • Participates in internal and external standards and intellectual property development as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in work experience
  • Eight years of experience in enterprise, application, and/or information architecture within a line of business or enterprise area
  • Two years of previous management experience

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge
  • Bachelor's in technology related field or equivalent with 10+ years of technology Architecture experience
  • Advanced STEM degree or 20 years' experience with progressive learning and skill enhancement preferred
  • 10+ years of experience building high performance teams.
  • 8+ years of executive communications & partnership experience.
  • Current expertise in three of more of the following: AI/ML, IOT, blockchain technologies, mixed reality, modern cybersecurity, high performance computing, distributed computing, cloud architectures.
  • Current usage and experience with multiple languages and frameworks (preferred includes Python, JavaScript/Node, R, C#/F#, Java/Scala).
  • Experience with contributing to open-source projects
  • Experience with manipulating large and disparate datasets in complex organizations.
  • Provided mentorship to architecture leaders
  • Organizational and transformational Leadership Experience in an agile operating model
  • Expert level Software Engineering awareness
  • Led development of strategic technology direction and architecture vision for an organization
  • Developed technology target state, roadmaps that aligned to Short- and Long-term business goals
  • Proven track record of Influencing C-level leadership
  • Insurance technology experience
  • Strong grasp of value creation and business capability models

  • Demonstrated ability to drive decisions

Job Specific Technical Skills & Competencies
  • Must be passionate about technology transformations
  • Understanding and experience of scaling systems from prototype to the enterprise.
  • Deep understanding of current and trending technologies.
  • Has hands on experience in the last 3 years
  • Executed technology modernization initiatives including migration to cloud native and API Strategy
  • Candidate can dig into a research question with sometimes ambiguous framing and the skill and experience to impose focus and direction.
  • Insatiable curiosity to understand our industry, Travelers, and how to transform our business
  • Must be a critical thinker: You can naturally analyze and break problems into their essential parts and highlight perspectives on outcomes and be able to test potential outcomes.

  • Cloud Architecture Certification (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure) or strong architecture experience on Cloud
  • Good understanding of modern security
  • Experienced with large scale technology platforms
