The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.Salary Range$125,900.00 - $207,800.00Target Openings1What Is the Opportunity?Travelers is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. Individual will complete advanced software end to end engineering tasks that span many parts of a system including designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system specifications. Individual will also consult with users to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications, manage the effective use of resources, act as subject matter expert across multiple applications, systems and technologies, leverage technical and business knowledge to drive the planning and execution of complex initiatives, participate in the design/ development process, and provide technical leadership, while leading a team of SWE.What Is the Opportunity?Travelers is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to join our Digital Enablement team as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. In addition to hands on development activities the Director of Software Engineering will have HR management responsibility for 4 - 6 engineers. This individual will drive technical direction and strategic initiatives within our Digital Content Capabilities Circle (agile team of teams), which support the creation and delivery of content (policy documents, Claim Correspondence, HR checks, etc) for a wide variety of partners across Travelers. You will plan and execute at a strategic level, lead the design, development and implementation of significantly complex problems that extend beyond the confines of a team and establish software engineering best practices and standards. You will direct expert software end to end engineering tasks including designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system specifications for impactful and high-visibility initiatives. This is a high-impact role as Travelers explores new technologies and continues an exciting modernization journey.What Will You Do?- Lead a team of Software Engineers across several agile teams as they design, develop, and support the business partners with a mission to drive long-term value.
- Set technical direction and effectively influences across multiple teams to improve the overall quality of engineering practices and skill sets.
- Provide technical thought leadership, foster a team environment, and provide mentorship and coaching feedback to technical resources while assisting development teams.
- Ability to influence priorities by identifying solutions that are aligned with current business objectives and closely follow industry trends.
- Establish short- and long-term technology roadmaps for the organization.
- Partner with broader software engineering excellence groups in shaping technology best practices for the team.
- Lead POC efforts to investigate new technologies and business capabilities.
- Participate and contribute meaningfully to architecture and design activities, especially as we evolve to the public cloud.
- Provide human resources management, including coaching, performance management, team development and growth, and workforce planning.
- Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
- Act as subject matter expert across multiple applications, systems and technologies.
- Seek opportunities where technology can be utilized to improve the business and provide more efficient processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 5 years of related experience; including insurance / financial services industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices).
- Interprets internal/ external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve SDLC processes.
- Delivery - Advanced delivery skills including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts, use automated tests, analysis, and informed feedback loops to ensure the quality and production readiness of work before release, monitor the health of work efforts and that of adjacent systems.
- Domain Expertise - Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to develop business partnerships and influence priorities by identifying solutions that are aligned with current business objective and closely follow industry trends relevant to domain, understanding how to apply them, and sharing knowledge with coworkers.
- Problem Solving - Strong problem solver who utilizes data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions to difficult problems, reflects on solutions, measuring their impact, and uses that information to ideate and optimize. Also adept at making decisions that involve a significant number of factors with broad implications.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience.
- Three years of programming/development experience.
