Job DescriptionDirector of Policy CommunicationsOverview:The Director of Policy Communications is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies in support of Merck’s U.S. and global public policy priorities. This individual will engage with key stakeholders and will partner with the U.S. and global public policy team to implement strategies in priority markets. The role will require a highly collaborative individual who is able to work closely with key internal and external stakeholders including with trade associations, multilateral organizations, NGOs and key opinion leaders.This individual has a deep understanding of the U.S. and global policy landscape, and experience engaging on geopolitical issues. The Director of Policy Communications must have the ability to quickly respond to media inquiries and questions from government officials or other key stakeholders. Key responsibilities of the role include creating and amplifying content, vetting reporter inquiries, drafting key documents including speeches and testimony, and providing strategic counsel to the larger communications team.The Director of Policy Communications will report to the Vice President of Global Communications and Strategic Operations and will work closely with the Vice President, U.S. Public Policy and the Vice President, Head of Global Public Policy and International Affairs.This role is based in Washington, D.C.Scope of work and core responsibilities includes:Develop and execute policy communications strategies, including media relations strategies

Partner with the public policy team and regional comms lead to execute policy communications with media and key stakeholders

Draft key policy communications documents including written testimony and official correspondence (e.g., letters, speeches, talking points)

Build and maintain relationships with key third-party and stakeholder groups

Proactively monitor policy, advocacy and media landscape to inform the development of company policy strategies

Vet and respond to policy related media inquiries in a timely manner

Provide strategic counsel to the communications team

Define and keep track of performance metrics

Qualifications6+ years of experience in government relations, public affairs, communications, healthcare, policy, advocacy relations, or equivalent

Superb writing, editing and communications skills, including the ability to speak to key media

Exceptional attention to detail and flawless instinct

Strong track record of executing policy communications strategies

Capitol Hill and lobbying experience preferred

Experience working in emerging markets preferred

Excellent people management skills

Positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to network within a highly-matrixed organization and maintain collaborative relationships

Strong project management skills with proven success managing major projects

Proficient using the Microsoft Office Suite

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
