This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs welding in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of various highway structures and facilities, including overhead signs, structures, guardrails, handrails, elements of drainage structures, and other elements related to highway structures and facilities.

Assist in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test passenger vehicles to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.

Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order. Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.

Submits requests for parts and supplies. Operates personal computers and printers for processing work orders. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders.

Responds to emergency road service calls and performs minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location. Performs minor paint and body repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: repair and maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment; diagnostic equipment; the use of repair manuals. Skilled in: the use of hand tools and mechanical equipment; replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc.; documenting work performed and materials used on work orders; performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment; customer service. Ability to: operate motor vehicles; troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems; perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance; assist in body and fender repair work; lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend; use appropriate safety equipment; work independently; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; perform minor welding; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. Knowledge of principles, techniques, equipment, and materials of the welding trade. Knowledge of principles and techniques used in gas and electric welding and equipment maintenance and repair. Ability to perform flat, vertical, and horizontal welding. Ability to perform oxygen, acetylene, and electrical welding related to automotive and equipment repairs. Ability to take accurate measurements.

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: During emergencies & natural disasters, incumbent shall be available to work non-standard and/or extended hours. Incumbent must be able to wear and use a respirator. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must successfully obtain and maintain training, certification, a satisfactory criminal background check and any additional requirements provided by the Department of Corrections in order to supervise inmates. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT). Possess a valid Class E driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and experience in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance, and one year of experience as a welder or graduate from an accredited welding program. One year of experience in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance or an additional year of experience as a welder is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Possess a valid Class E driver's license.
