FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more. How you will make an impact The incumbent of this position supervises the In-school suspension program known as the “Opportunity for Improvement” (OFI) program in a K-12 academic program with deaf/hard of hearing and/or blind students.

Supervises and monitors one or more students who have been assigned in-school suspension or who are exhibiting behavioral concerns. This includes students who have short-term behavior problems and/or students exhibiting high risk behaviors. Assists in analyzing individual student needs and in designing an approach to support each student while in the program. Obtains classroom work and guidance from teachers in their academic subject areas for students assigned to the program to provide continuity of instruction through remediation and tutoring services to students. Provides and maintains documentation and feedback of student progress and participation. Assists in data collection for student behavior plans as needed. Supports Principal, Assistant Principals, Dean, and Behavior Specialist to support change behaviors through reteaching of appropriate behaviors and/or stress management to enable the student to return to the classroom/school setting. Provides supervision and reinforcement of school-wide expectations during transitions and mealtimes. This position is based in the Deaf High School but serves students from K-12 in both the Deaf and the Blind Departments where needed.

Serves as a classroom/school support during times when students are not assigned to the in-school suspension program.

Works along-side High School counselors to serve on the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support team to create innovative and supportive positive interventions across the school and to assist in implementing the program.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of child development;

Knowledge of behavior management techniques and skills;

Ability to build rapport with deaf and blind students;

Ability to use problem-solving techniques;

Ability to communicate verbally, in writing, and proficient in American Sign Language;

Ability to tutor and remediate students in areas of academic need;

Ability to supervise children individually and in small groups;

Ability to work collaboratively with others;

Ability to organize and maintain records management systems; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24.

Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI.

Qualifications

An associate's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing, education, or a social, behavioral or rehabilitative science and two years of experience involving the application of behavior modification principles; or

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing, education, or a social, behavioral or rehabilitative science.

Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain Advanced proficiency in sign language within one year of hire.

Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

Hiring Salary Range 10 month position: $26,145.60 - $29,145.60. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

Hours Monday – Friday; 7:30am to 3:30pm
