They will work with a degree of independence to research environmental adaptability, light environment, irrigation and crop water management, soil and media management, nutrient management. breeding technologies, and crop model development. The incumbent will conduct experiments that involve soil and plant nutrient sampling and analysis, root sampling, evaluation, measurements of plant growth, plant morphology, physiological development, tuber and fruit yield as well as vegetable quality evaluation using manual and advanced sensors. Driving to different research sites will be required. Incumbent is responsible for training, supervising, and assisting graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and visiting scientists in HiperGator protocols, assisting with training of personnel in proper application of models, and use of UF computing capabilities. Incumbent is responsible for implementation of protocols in controlled environments, data collection and data entry, statistical analysis and archiving of all data from experimental trials. Incumbent is responsible for preparation of written research reports, submission on time. Demonstrated abilities to work in High Performance Computing Environments is highly desirable. The incumbent should have programming abilities in Phyton, and/or Perl and/or R. Ability to work outdoors in Controlled Environments for extended hours when required. Ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences and engineering. Ability to conduct biological research studies or analyses using scientific methods and techniques. Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.Responsible for developing and maintaining productive, professional interactions with all co-workers, grower cooperators, service and maintenance people, and suppliers of laboratory/office supplies and instruments.Responsible for ordering/purchasing of field, laboratory, greenhouse, and office supplies and maintaining a reconciled accounting for expenditures. Ultimate financial responsibility remains with the program manager/principal investigator. Confidentiality is required to the extent required by the sponsoring agencies and/or university-established rules and regulations governing privacy, intellectual property development and all other business practice(s).Work schedule:8 am to 5 pm, weekdays, total of 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend duties may be required depending on research objectives. Extended work periods may be required during harvest periods. Some data collection will require extended workdays beyond 8 hr. Availability to travel will be required due to some of the deployment of sensors in the field, and to become familiar with project goals seeking to benefit growers and stakeholders of the State of Florida.Expected Salary:$50,000Minimum Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.Preferred Qualifications:A Master's degree in Engineering is desirable but not required.Special Instructions to Applicants:This is a Time-Limited position.This position requires certification for handling limited pesticide application in greenhouse and controlled environment trials.
