This statewide program has the responsibility for the operation and/or surveillance of all activities involved in the control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases; especially Syphilis, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. The program’s main objective is to interrupt the transmission of STDs; thereby reducing their incidence and prevalence, as well as their medical sequelae. This position Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) works with minimal supervision in all aspects of the STD Program. Travel may be required.This position provides confidential counseling, testing and referral for medical treatment for persons either diagnosed with or exposed to a STD. Clients who are diagnosed with a STD are also offered partner referral services that allow for the notification, screening and treatment referral for their sex or needle-sharing partners. Communicates with physicians, hospitals, clinics, and laboratory personnel, both public and private, to confirm treatment and diagnosis of all reportable STDs. The DIS will arrange for examination and treatment of the client if needed. Field investigations to locate clients in the home or community setting who test positive with a STD/HIV or have been named as a contact. Provide counseling, education, testing and referral for treatment of all STDs. Assists in staffing the HIV night clinic, as assigned.Manages assigned cases of Syphilis and HIV infection according to policy; prepares and submits all documents and reports associated with job assignment. The DIS conducts interviews according to established guidelines and protocols.Performs blood draws. Participation in outreach activities. Compile, organize and analyze data; plan, organize and coordinate work activities; prepare records and reports: maintain strict confidentiality; identify community resources; prepare and conduct training programs; communicate effectively in day-to-day job activities which includes written and oral skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Computer skills and data entry skills required.Take history and identify symptoms of infection. Make appropriate treatment referrals. HIV counseling and testing will also be performed according to state guidelines.Must document in the client records and on field records in a concise accurate manner. Enters STD results into the Surveillance Tools and Reporting System (STARS) system as assigned. Accurately completes employee activity records in the Health Management System (HMS).Develop and deliver education and prevention training, for diverse audiences, individuals, groups, and all clients, as assigned or as needed; on all STDs, which define ways to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease that they have or define techniques to risk reduction, so they will not become infected.Other related duties as assigned.
