Description: Job Title: Lead, Mechanical Engineering Job Code: SAS20212710-71716 Job Location: Palm Bay, Fl Job Description: Leads Design teams and provides technical guidance for functional systems to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations at L3Harris. Conducts engineering investigations involving the creation or modification of a current design. Utilizes CAD equipment (Creo) to develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals. Performs product development activities including drawing layout and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements. Investigates and makes decisions regarding pertinent design factors such as; ease of manufacture, material properties, current equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, contractual specifications, schedule and cost. Ensures the design is documented and meets all requirements prior to use on the manufacturing floor. Essential Functions: Provides technical guidance for the design and development of parts, tooling and fixtures to support various manufacturing processes at L3Harris.

Guides or Generates innovative designs concepts by working with internal Program groups, Research and Development Teams and other areas of Engineering and Operations, where products are designed for use in Space, Aerospace and Ground applications.

Leads design teams that are responsible for meeting design requirements, cost targets and schedule need dates.

Leads meetings and peer design reviews with Program and team members.

Ensures the design is documented and meets all requirements by creating, reviewing and approving; material selection, CAD parts and assemblies, detailed drawings, bills of materials, drawing release, part fabrication, part inspection, integration, proof loading and verification of product performance on the manufacturing floor.

Frequent communication required with both external suppliers and internal customers.

Responsible for providing technical guidance, coaching and training to other design staff.

Provide guidance to create improvement projects which will streamline various manufacturing processes in the future.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years, or a Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant work experience in design supporting a manufacturing environment

Experience with CAD software:Advanced experience in drawing creation, release and revision skills using a Product Data Management System

PTC Creo 4.0 (2.0 or higher)

Windchill (11.0 preferred)

Proven ability to mentor and guide other Design staff on Creo CAD and Drawing best practices

Knowledge of Industry and Military drafting standards and practices, specifically ASME Y14.5-2009 and ASME Y14.100

Advanced understanding and application of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Advanced knowledge of materials; aluminum, stainless steels, plastics and additive manufacturing materials

Experience coordinating procurement of tools and hardware

Advanced knowledge of fasteners and mechanical hardware

Able to coordinate hardware installation, tooling assembly, fit checks, verification

Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience

Knowledge of mechanical shop operations and technology including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, plating processes and painting

Advanced user of product data management software and experience working with configuration management to release drawings and other documentation

Possess a high level of initiative and willingness to learn

Strong sense of responsibility, ownership and follow-through

Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills

Ability to multitask, lead team members and also work independently to research design solutions

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Additional Skills:

Previous Hands-on Manufacturing and Machining experience

Hands-on experience performing hardware installation, tooling assembly, fit checks, verification

Experience with additive manufacturing / rapid prototyping techniques and equipment. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), 3D Printing, etc.
