Description of Duties:

The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position is in the Office of Conservation Planning Services.

This is a rewarding and challenging opportunity to contribute to landscape-level conservation objectives and benefit rare and imperiled species and their habitats. This position serves as a biologist in the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation’s Office of Conservation Planning Services (CPS). Biologists in the Office gain in-depth knowledge of Florida's environmental regulations and their practical applications, serve the public, and develop an enhanced understanding of listed species habitats and life histories while helping to shape a sustainable future in Florida. Biologists work as part of a talented and diverse team and coordinate with wildlife experts throughout the Agency.

The primary focus for this position will be the Office’s payment for ecosystem services efforts. This position will work with private landowners that are looking to enhance wildlife and habitat conservation on their properties and partner agencies working with the Florida panther. This will involve internal and external coordination that supports the day-to-day requirements of the programs that provide financial incentives for panther depredations and habitat management activities. This position will also coordinate across the Division and help manage any grant-related duties for this body of work. This position will research similar efforts in other states, work with social science research projects involving PES, and review and comment on regulated activities that have potential to impact fish and wildlife resources. Other responsibilities may include coordination of CPS activities with other agency sections, divisions and offices and external stakeholders; participation on technical committees and various FWC issue teams; and providing conservation planning subject matter expertise.

To excel in this role, the successful candidate must have an understanding of fish and wildlife ecology and management needs, a practical knowledge of working lands (cattle, silviculture, agriculture), have some experience with grant management and reporting, and general knowledge of the Florida panther. Proficiency in technical writing and the use of GIS software is essential, and candidates will be expected to demonstrate these skills during the interview process. Ideal candidates will have mastered these knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Much of the work in this position will be conducted from an office during regular business hours, and biologists in the Office enjoy a relatively predictable work schedule with the flexibility to attend site visits or assist other FWC staff in the field when appropriate. Occasional long days and overnight travel to southwest Florida are expected. Agency supported and individual-specific training will be made available to the person in this position as needed.

The position is responsible for timely and accurate processing and or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered to avoid automatic interest penalty payments to said vendors. It is responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, F.S., related to State Comptroller’s rules, as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures. Responsibilities may include legislative interactions. The position is expected to courteously assist Commission constituents to resolve questions or problems they may have in matters relating to the Commission, its programs or fish and wildlife conservation, generally. It is expected to actively garner public support for agency objectives and programs by serving Florida’s citizens in a positive and proactive manner.

Desired Minimum Requirements:

M inimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife or fisheries management, zoology, environmental sciences or other closely related curriculum, graduate degree and two years of professional experience preferred. Candidates must have experience writing and reviewing technical documents, must have experience with imperiled species or their habitats, and should be familiar with land use applications and/or permits. Successful candidates will have experience collaborating with entities of varying interests and be able to capably manage conflict with excellent communication skills. Above all, the successful applicant will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, organized, and have a commitment to natural resource conservation and excellence in customer service.

A cover letter and resume should be included with the application package. For questions regarding this position, please contact Luis Gonzalez atLuis.Gonzalez@MyFWC.comor by phone at (941) 661-1918.
