The Systems Engineer Mechanical reports to the Team Leader - Systems Engineer and work with the Modeling, Simulation, and Training Tools (MST) team within Global Engineering & Technology. MST is a team of multi-disciplinary engineers who help tackle difficult engineering and design problems by applying pioneering simulation and digital design tools. Our team provides detailed engineering simulation, design engineering, and analysis services worldwide for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), Park Operations Line of Business, Global Engineering & Technology partners, Transportation, Engineering Services, and Entertainment.
For this role, these services may include developing: dynamic electro-mechanical and controls system simulations; robotic simulation; finite element analyses; rigid or multi-body dynamic simulations; kinematics evaluation of mechanical systems; design engineering, kinematic layout, and machine design; development of signal processing and optimization algorithms; large-scale transportation simulations; development of in-house engineering software tools; development of digital twins; model-based design and code generation; and statistical analyses or data analytics.You Will:On any given day, as a Systems Engineer Mechanical, you might:- Review, derive and model detailed mechanical and system-level simulations using multiple simulation software and software development environments (e.g., MATLAB, ANSYS, Working Model, Gazebo, SolidWorks, or Visual Studio).
- Work with our WDI and Facilities and Operations Services (FOS) partners in the application of analysis techniques and new tool development.
- Contribute to the development of supporting software tools using Python/C for simulation workflows for animatronics and other show systems.
- Develop mechanical plant models (dynamic and systems simulations) applying MATLAB/Simscape.
- Support mechanical analyses applying ANSYS FEA and Fluent CFD.
- Produce status reports detailing project activities.
- Apply standard engineering techniques and ensure that designs follow appropriate regulatory codes and internal standards.
- Develop proposals including job assignments, scopes of work, validation plans, and procedures.
- Experience in modeling and simulation software such as Matlab, Simulink, Gazebo, and ANSYS.
- Experience with dynamics systems modeling and working with linear and non-linear materials solutions in finite element space.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or SpaceClaim.
- Experience with mechatronics systems, sensors, machine control or automation, structural analysis, mechanical design, and machine design principles.
- General knowledge of system and software design, coding, and debugging.
- Physics and mathematics academic background, including differential equations and physical model derivation.
- 1+ years of working in a related role in the entertainment or general engineering industries.
- Ability to transition modeling and simulation results to design decisions.
- Experience with working in ride, show action equipment or animatronic systems.
- Experience with robotic system development, simulation platforms and Robot Operating System (ROS).
- Experience with the development of plant models for HILs and digital twins.
- Experience with design, implementation, or testing of Windows desktop applications using C, C, Or C#.
- Experience with Systems Engineering concepts and tools (SysML, IDEF0).
- Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell and Python.
- Experience with PLC hardware or motor drive, programming, and troubleshooting.
- Familiar with Agile software development practices, including scrum, sprint planning, retrospectives, etc.
- Familiar with GitHub, SVN or similar version control and documentation revision tool sets.
- Experience in Machine Design, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and Mechanical Drawing Practices.
- Proven Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or Equivalent from ABET certified curriculum.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is highly preferred.
- Proven MSEE, MSME, MSCE, or postgraduate work is preferred.
