Our research program is the largest in the Emory School of Medicine, with almost $200M in annual research funding, over 1,200 publications, and over 380 active clinical trials. The position of Scientist, DOM Office of Research will be the scientific program lead who is responsible for development and execution of key programs, events, and initiatives in the DOM Office of Research. This individual reports to the Vice Chair of the Research for the Department of Medicine. Preferred experience would be a PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) and two years of professional level experience in a research laboratory who is ready to take the next step of having a broad impact by promoting collaborative programs and novel initiatives to enrich the Department of Medicine research community.The Academic Research Scientist functions as a highly skilled contributor/researcher and has significant authorship on publications and advanced knowledge and expertise of laboratory and experimental platforms necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs. Staff Scientists will have leadership responsibilities, and will oversee quality and training of other team members.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include designing, developing and conducting research experiments.

Will have expert knowledge and skills specific to the related program and advanced knowledge of methods of analyzing data from experimental platforms.

May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of a program.

With approval of the leading Emory faculty member a Scientist may be the principal investigator on grant proposals.

Performs other responsibilities as required.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Research Program Development & Implementation: Partner with the Vice Chair to run existing department programs (ex: DAB Core, Grant Writing) and operationalize new programs that are developed. This can include coordinating efforts across various teams within the department and ensuring effective communication, resource allocation, and project management.

Collaboration and Partnerships: Establish and nurture collaborations with external stakeholders, including other departments, research institutions, and industry partners. Promote knowledge exchange and joint initiatives.

Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development of long-term research strategies, identifying areas for growth and innovation. Work closely with the Vice Chair and other department leadership to align research goals with institutional objectives.

Data Analysis and Reporting: Works with Senior Program Coordinator to analyze department research data, prepare reports, and present findings to internal and external audiences.

Event Organization: Coordinate seminars, workshops, and conferences related to research and conversion science (ex: Research Day, R2NEXUS).

Team Support: Organize and help facilitate research committees for the Department (ex: Research Advisory Council, mentoring committees).

Supervision: Supervise the Office of Research’s Senior Program Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD and two years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab OR master's degree and four years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab OR bachelor's degree and six years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.

Laboratory experience should be based on area of assignment.

Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, etc.).

Strong project management skills

Excellent communication and networking abilities.

Experience in grant writing and administration.

Proficiency in data analysis tools and software.
