The position’s primary responsibilities include veterinary diagnostics, research support, and maintaining a quality assurance program.JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.

Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.

May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation. Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.

Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.

Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

ADDITIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION:Diagnostic activities account for 20% of duties. This position is responsible for the assessment, receipt, and preparation of veterinary specimen for shipping to external labs or internally for analyses. In-house diagnostics are performed with Zoetis, Alfa Wassermann, Charm, and LaMotte analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools that diagnose animal illness, injury, and/or diseases. Routine diagnostic tests include PCV/TS, CBC, blood chemistry, urinalysis, parasitology, blood smears, etc. Additional responsibilities include equipment startup, controls, calibrations, and maintenance.Skills essential for primary job function:

Experience setting up, running, and operating lab instruments.

Knowledge of general medical and laboratory terminology, specimen processing procedures, and laboratory equipment.

General science background, including hematology/chemistry.

Experience in operating efficiently and effectively to meet tight turnaround times in a lab environment.

Attention to detail with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and ability to work independently.

Demonstrated ability to follow and adhere to policies and practices.

Research Support activities account for 50% of duties. This position is a lab liaison for internal and external inquiries regarding our services and/or coordination of equipment rental or necropsy suite use. Additional daily activities will include maintaining supply inventory, record-keeping, cleaning, clerical tasks, faculty and resident research support, and various specimen collections.Skills essential for primary job function:

Strong organization skills with attention to detailStrong data entry skills

Proficient use of Microsoft Office

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven history for providing exceptional customer service

Preparing reports after collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data

Experience or interest in the research process

Quality Assurance activities account for 30% of duties. Activities revolve around the assessment of biospecimen, animal feed, drinking water, and sanitation procedures for quality measures.

Biospecimen approval duties include review/analysis of investigator submissions and communication of pathogen screening requirements. Research Specialist will issue approvals and maintain results database.

Sanitation monitoring duties include training investigative and DAR staff on sanitation standards and cleaning methods. Research Specialist will perform quality assurance testing in-house as well as on-site when necessary. This position will communicate with DAR supervisors and investigative staff to resolve QA problems.

Skills essential for primary job function

Implementing methods to inspect, test, and evaluate equipment

Ability to think outside of the box and solve problem

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a scientific field

OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working in a core laboratory; Setting up, running, and reading lab tests; Operating laboratory equipment (pipettes, microscopes, and/or clinical diagnostic analyzers).

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification

Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), experience and education.
