DescriptionJOB DESCRIPTION: Provides direct respiratory care to patients in acute chronic and emergency situations. Performs routine ventilator and artificial airway treatments in the critical and general care areas. Assists physicians and performs other routine respiratory care activities as necessary. Selects, assembles, and checks respiratory care equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness and performs minor repairs to correct malfunctions. Performs related responsibilities as required. Equipment and Supplies: Selects, assembles, and checks respiratory care equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness; performs minor repairs to correct malfunctions. Mixes medications for aerosolization prior to treatment. Patient Care and Advocacy: Reviews patients' medical history, patient chart, respiratory care orders, physician examination, pulmonary function values, blood gas results and additional laboratory data to assist in developing a respiratory care plan for the patient. Collects and evaluates pertinent clinical information by inspecting, palpating, percussion, auscultation of the chest, and patient interview. Monitors and evaluates the patient's response to respiratory therapy and communicates findings to other members of the health care team to ensure the coordination of optimal patient care. Initiates and administers emergency respiratory therapy techniques, including CPR, patient monitoring, and transport. Performs all aspects of respiratory care services for adult and geriatric patients on a routine basis, and provides emergency airway care for pediatric and neonatal patients as needed in all areas of the hospital except for the Operating Room. Recommends modifications in the respiratory care plan based upon the patient's response including changes in medication, altering treatment schedules, and modifying treatment techniques. Recommends the collection of additional data by chest x-ray, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function studies and other laboratory tests. Provides assistance to physicians performing invasive procedures including bronchoscopies and tracheostomies. Performs prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation, and adequate spontaneous or artificial ventilation including extubation, removal of secretions, and the administration of prescribed pharmacologic agents. Responds to patients and visitors in a positive, helpful, and professional manner to ensure that their needs are met. Professional Development: Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Safety, Security and Health: Practices universal and/or specialized precautions in the daily cleaning and sterilization of work surfaces, equipment, and instruments.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Currently certified as a Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Licensed as a Respiratory Care Professional (RCP) by the state of Georgia. BLS certification required.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required.
