Program Manager, Kaua‘i Local Food Cooperative Farmers Market Booth

About Us:

Founded in 2006, Mālama Kaua‘i is a community-based, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing local food production and access for Kaua‘i. We do this through a lens of resilience and sustainability, leveraging workforce and economic development efforts, partnerships, and innovative programs to grow community capacity.

Since 2020, our KauaiLocalFood.com food hub has supported over 100 local farmers and food producers, purchasing and distributing over $3.5M in local food. This new pilot project expands on that work by launching a cooperative farmers market booth to increase visibility for local producers and improve food access for our community. Visit MalamaKauai.org for more information on our work.

The Job:

This part-time position (20 hours per week) manages the implementation and operations of the Kaua‘i Local Food Cooperative Farmers Market Booth Pilot, a one-year initiative designed to increase community access to local food while supporting small farmers and producers.

The Program Manager will lead the booth’s day-to-day operations at two farmers markets, coordinate vendor participation, oversee SNAP/WIC acceptance programs, and conduct outreach to promote various food access programs.

Work is split approximately 50% in-field (attending Saturday and Wednesday afternoon markets to start) and 50% administrative (based in our Līhu‘e office). This has the opportunity to grow into more markets based on success.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

- Oversee setup, staffing, and operation of Mālama Kaua‘i’s farmers market booth at multiple locations across the island.

- Coordinate vendor participation, product promotion, and product rotation representing various local farmers and food producers.

- Manage payments, inventory tracking, and SNAP / WIC / EBT processing at markets.

- Collect, track, and report data on sales, transactions, and community engagement metrics.

- Lead public outreach to promote KauaiLocalFood.com, Double Up Food Bucks, and other local food access resources.

- Support communications and marketing efforts through flyers, social media, and community partnerships.

- Contribute to monthly/quarterly reports and program evaluation, offering insights on pilot outcomes and long-term sustainability.

- Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and food hub team to ensure smooth coordination and community impact.

Qualifications:

We’re looking for a self-motivated, community-minded team player who thrives in both administrative and customer-facing roles, with strong attention to detail. Ideal candidates will have:

- 2+ years of experience in program coordination, project management, food systems, retail, or community programs

- Strong organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills

- Proficiency with Google Workspace, as well as using apps and digital tracking tools

- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs regularly, set up a pop-up tent without assistance, and work in outdoor environments

- A positive, flexible, and customer-service-oriented attitude

- A passion for supporting local food systems and small farmers

Pay & Benefits:

Pay is $25–$30/hr for 20 hours per week, no-cost health/dental/vision insurance, and discounts on local food through our programs. Opportunities for continued and expanded work may be available depending on funding and program success — we’d love to find someone who wants to grow with us.

To Apply:

Send a resume and a brief intro letter sharing your desired work schedule and pay expectations.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, as we are looking to start this role in November.

Local knowledge is critical for this position; off-island candidates will not be considered.
