THE IMPACT YOU CAN HAVE:

The Merchandise Operations (MerchOps) Business Intelligence (BI) team is responsible for supporting the objectives of the Merchandising organization at Ulta Beauty with effective data and analytical solutions. With merchandise being at the heart of most everything we do, the team regularly collaborates with cross-functional partners across the enterprise (e.g., Finance, Supply Chain, Marketing, Store Operations) to ensure solutions and their dependencies are being addressed holistically. Similarly, the team works very closely with various IT teams to grasp an understanding of key merchandising and BI applications that ensure team members can become functional subject matter experts, acting as liaisons between the business and technology.

As a Data Scientist on our team, you will be instrumental in driving data-driven solutions to key strategic objectives for the Merchandising organization in the areas of Buying, Planning, and Inventory. This role will act as a thought partner to leadership on the value and application of artificial intelligence while also focusing on developing advanced capabilities in this space. Individual contributions may consist of the end-to-end implementation of machine learning, prediction, and recommendation systems to support upcoming enterprise projects as well as helping stakeholders understand relationships within their data.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and develop autonomous programs that achieve merchandising objectives and generate efficiencies across the organization.
  • Develop a strong partnership and collaboration with the internal Ulta Beauty teams, performing as a team member who consults on how to attain the business goals by leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Solve business problems by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches
  • Explain and present complex approaches in a concise manner to garner buy in from business partners
  • Assess and understand the cost/benefit relationship of developing and deploying learned models based on business needs.
  • Ensure data integrity by leveraging proven methodologies, including data reconciliation, data integration and data audits.

THE ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS:
  • 3 years of professional experience in analytical functions
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical techniques and concepts (e.g., multivariate regression, A/B tests, decision trees, etc.) and experience applying these to use cases
  • Experience using statistical computer languages (e.g. Python, R) and related frameworks to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.
  • Experience with SQL and related data access and analysis tools to mine data, identify insights, and extract features
  • Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform
  • Hands-on experience with designing, deploying, and maintaining machine learning pipelines
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to communicate complex ideas to various audiences in both a technical and user-friendly language
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently by handling multiple projects, meeting deadlines, prioritizing appropriately, and responding to issues quickly and creatively with an open and positive attitude
  • Energetic and self-motivated with a strong sense of curiosity - must be extremely organized and detail oriented with an ability to make proactive recommendations
  • View the "big picture" and drive towards business results
  • Comfort working in a dynamic, research-oriented team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's of Master's degree in related discipline preferred (e.g. Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics)
  • Experience in retailer and e-commerce industries
  • Experience with Merchandising processes (e.g. Buying, Planning, Inventory)
  • Experience with or knowledge of Agile Software Development methodologies
  • Knowledge of software development principles and architectures
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., Tensorflow, Torch, etc.)
  • Google's Certified Professional-Data-Engineer certification, or other Professional certifications
  • Work sponosrship is not offererd for this role

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Travel - Minimal 10%
  • Hybrid office flex work scheudle
  • Ability to work beyond normal schedule during critical periods.
