About the role This role is a part of the Aon Technology Global Enterprise Architecture team. The Director for Digital Platform Solutions Architecture will lead a distributed team of Enterprise Architects who are co-responsible for the design of global technology platforms at Aon.

Our technology platforms enable enhanced efficiency and value delivery at a truly enterprise scale, partnering with teams across the organization to accelerate and drive the next wave of cloud innovation.

The candidate will lead a team to develop target-state mentorship (reusable standards, guidelines, individual parts and configurations) for evolving cloud applications platforms, collaboration solutions and cloud infrastructure across the enterprise.

Key focus areas for the Digital Platform Solutions team include Cloud, DevSecOps, machine learning, Automation, Low-code, BPM, Integration, Digital Workplace and AI. The Global Enterprise Architecture team provides a center of excellence spanning public (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and private cloud that helps define and support services, processes and technology platforms which colleagues can use in an autonomous and secure way.

We are looking for experienced technical architecture leaders with a strong self-directed work ethic who can help break new ground working with global teams to establish new standards and reference architectures/patterns for cloud services.

This role can be located in Chicago, New York, Texas, California or Virtual Chicago, New York, Texas or California regions. Your impact The successful candidate can be remote (US) or out of our Chicago/Lincolnshire, Illinois office working closely with both local and global architecture, application development and engineering colleagues to help accelerate and drive the next wave of innovative products and services. The person we are looking for

Applicants are expected to have experience with:
  • Modern application development and application architecture to be able to engage at advisory level with leaders, engineers, and developers
  • Crafting and building highly scalable cloud native, micro-services architecture based applications including serverless functions.
  • Building and using containers (e.g., Docker and Kubernetes based such as ECS, EKS, AKS)
  • DevSecOps' platform architecture and toolset needed to deliver infrastructure as code (e.g. GitLab, Azure DevOps, Artifactory, Ansible, Terraform)
  • Experience with embedding security and governance in cloud native platforms (e.g. static / dynamic testing, monitoring, cloud security/compliance, etc.)
Job Responsibilities:
  • Understand business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state) and creating corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Business & IT Leaders within projects to ensure the project is aligned with the overall enterprise architecture.
  • Understand technology trends and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models. Analyze the technology industry, competitors and market trends, and understand their potential impact on the enterprise.
  • Define the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision.
  • Facilitate the evaluation and selection of software product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurations.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure development teams to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture and identify when it is vital to modify projects to accommodate the solutions architecture.
  • Identify the organizational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architecture.
  • Coach and guide your team to embrace the values of our Aon United culture.
Required Experience:
  • 5+ years' experience in a similar role, working in a medium-large scale enterprise
  • Demonstrated experience of working with business leaders on the implications of architectural decisions
  • 4+ years building cloud native architectures and architecting enterprise applications on public cloud platforms (Such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform or Azure).
  • 5+years experience with DevOps or DevSecOps and building CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Artifactory, Chef, Terraform Ansible, AWS CloudFormation templates, GitHub, and Sonar
  • Experience with Docker/Kubernetes and Container Orchestration frameworks highly desirable
  • Familiar with distributed microservice design and orchestration including event-driven asynchronous messaging patterns.
  • Past application development experience in Python, Java, C# or other programming language with willingness to learn more as required.
  • Azure APIm, MuleSoft or other API Management Platform will be helpful.
  • Experience building digital platform solutions involving other capabilities such as Automation, Low-code, AI, etc, would be a plus

Education:
  • B.S Required. Computer Science or Engineering, preferred
