This OpportunityWSP is initiating a search for an Environmental Scientist with experience in environmental compliance and due diligence for our Birmingham, Alabama office . The following locations will also be considered: Decatur, Alabama; Brentwood, Tennessee. Conduct desktop and field environmental due diligence assessments of industrial and commercial facilities, transportation corridors, and vacant properties, including Phase I environmental site assessments.

Provide environmental, health, and safety (EHS) compliance support for clients, including developing procedures and permits, preparing and submitting periodic regulatory reports, and conducting site assessments, inspections, noise and IH assessments, desktop reviews, and audits.

Prepare Title V Air Reports, SPCC Plans, SWPPPs, Tier II and TRI, DMRs, hazardous waste registrations/renewals, training presentations, and other related regulatory plans and documents.

Assist with regulatory research for environmental compliance projects.

Synthesize large amounts of information contained in regulatory files, environmental permits, and other environmental documentation.

Assist in the collection of environmental samples (soil, groundwater, surface water, and vapor).

Collect and document field data and observations in a clear and organized manner utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and workspace monitoring equipment.

Analyze, evaluate, and interpret field, analytical, and environmental data obtained during field investigations, site inspections, site assessments, and desktop reviews.

Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software. Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations.

Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.

Assist in the development and preparation of environmental compliance and due diligence cost estimates and proposals in response to client needs and other business development activities.

Plan and manage projects according to client-approved scopes of work and deliver high quality deliverables on time and within project budget.

Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans.

Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.

Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You AreRequired Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental policy, engineering, earth science, or a related discipline with 3-5 years of related work experience or Associate in Science degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental policy, engineering, earth science, or a related discipline with 5-7 years of related work experience.

OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training,

Working knowledge of U.S. environmental laws and regulations, including but not limited to RCRA, EPCRA, CERCLA, , CWA, and CAA. International experience a plus.

Ability to draft environmental reports based on site observations/conditions and prepare regulatory reports for environmental programs including, but not limited to RCRA, EPCRA, CERCLA, CWA, and CAA.

Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials.

Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.

Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required, and safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.

Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature uneven terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within industrial facilities that include multiple floors, use of stairs or ladders, limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.

This role may be subject to a client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests.

Must have strong analytical skills and be able to solve problems independently, using knowledge gained from increasing experience.

Self-sufficient, self-motivated, and ability to work under pressure of deadlines.

Valid US driver's license.

Must be willing to make trips on short notice, including to local sites, and travel via air or land. When overnight travel is required, it is typically 1 to 3 nights per trip.

Audit-related trips may require up to 5 nights per trip. Overnight travel up to 50% of the time.

Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.

Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

Moderate proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in an environmental-related discipline.

RCRA/DOT Training, CPR and First Aid Training, and other related environmental training.

Experience working in an environmental role in a manufacturing environment.

Experience in conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.

Project management/leadership experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.

Environmental or engineering registrations/certifications.

Proficiency in ArcGIS software
