Senior Cloud and Big Data Engineer - INF001647

The Senior Cloud & Big Data Engineer is expected to be proficient in all the Cloud & Big Data technologies within our cross functional team. With limited guidance, the Senior Engineer drives quality improvement practices to ensure our Cloud & Big Data technology is functioning at an optimal performance level, is flexible for business needs and can be scaled for growth needs. Additionally, this role participates in cross training practices for our team as well as others who wish to learn more about how to use these technologies.

Note, the primary work function of this position is initially focused on Cloud (AWS/Azure) cloud engineering and process improvements to our cloud program. The ideal candidate will come in with AWS/Azure administration and engineering experience and will have some Python or Terraform experience to help with some of the automation. Additionally, will also help the team by expanding their experience beyond Cloud to the Big Data technology. Other than the performance improvement process aspect, functionally, this is more of an engineering/administration versus an ETL or code development type of position.

Location Note: This role can be performed in any UScellular business office within our operating footprint.

Essential Functions
  • Take ownership and proactively design, install, administrate, maintain, improve, monitor, troubleshoot and train others
  • Participate in technical roadmap sessions for Cloud & Big Data technologies
  • Participate in the Cloud Governance meetings and Virtual Team process
  • Administer the Cloud Intake tracker as a Cloud Use Case goes through our process
  • Assist with the validation and design of Cloud solutions
  • Build relationships with the Architecture, Data Governance, Data Integration, Engineering and Development teams in order to represent these teams in architecture and solution discussions related to Cloud & Big Data technologies
  • Leverage standards and automation to enable developers becoming self-sufficient where possible
  • Lead small-medium team projects following our project management processes
  • Execute lifecycle management activities (upgrades and patching in order to stay current and supported
  • Participate in analyzing incoming use cases and help your team to develop and implement a robust solution to meet business needs
  • Monitor and optimize performance. Drive proactive measures to track and address performance and capacity issues before our users experience it
  • Stay current with the industry best practices for the technologies we support
  • Conduct approved delegated technical activities from various IS and ENG teams as it pertains to Cloud or Big Data solutions; this may include but not limited to Networking, Server, Storage activities

Qualifications - External
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline, or equivalent work or military experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years administrating 2 or more of the following: Cloudera Hadoop / Confluent Kafka / AWS / MongoDB / EDB-PostgreSQL
  • 5+ years of experience with Cloud or Big data related principles, practices, and procedures
  • Experience working with application developers to understand their needs in order to help them and their programs to access Big Data platforms
  • Experience with Agile methodologies including Scrum
  • Ability to present at executive level and highly technical individuals
  • Ability to develop and maintain process workflows
  • Ability to use Jira to drive or update project activities
  • Experience with partitioning within Hadoop
  • Experience with creating and managing Kafka topics
  • Experience with managing RDBMS and NoSQL
  • Experience with native AWS modules and moving applications to AWS and supporting it
  • Experience with Cloud Center of Excellence and Cloud Maturity Models
  • Experience with RESTful API, Services is a plus
    • Experience with partitioning within Hadoop
    • Experience with crafting and handling Kafka topics
    • Experience with handling RDBMS and NoSQL technology
    • Experience with Linux systems and scripting languages
  • Experience with functional programming (Scala, Python, Terraform)
