Join us.DescriptionThe Natural Gas and Alternative Fuels team within the Energy and Transportation Technologies division (aka Engine Research Division) has an opportunity for a Sr. Engineer interested in alternative fuels, carbon capture, electrolysis, and other research topics related to engines and fuel cells. As a Senior Engineer focusing on engine lab work, combustion simulation, and engine/combustion related data analysis, you will be responsible for evaluating combinations of engine and fuel technologies that will meet a given set of requirements around power, fuel economy, emissions, sustainability, and other parameters. Incumbent would also work within our simulation community, customer facing teams (product definition), and engine product groups to develop technology sets, derive test plans, and analyze data to models to establish power system solutions for the future.The purpose of this role is to serve as an experienced, individual contributor on research and development projects and assignments that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability.Job DutiesThis position represents the journey level position for engineering related functions. The key role of a Sr. Engineer – Research is that of an individual contributor. This position will be accountable for contributing to the identification, analysis, and resolution of needs and problems in a discipline for which the incumbent is beginning to build a reputation as an expert. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams and begin enhancing general and business skills. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions may significantly impact on product performance, durability, quality, reliability, and serviceability; negotiations with suppliers; leveraging new technologies; warranty; total cost of non-quality; costs; sales; and customer perception.Success factors for the Sr. Engineer – Research include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up to date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.Sr. Engineers may expect to have direct contact with products, machines, or components while working in the field or at customer sites or may have direct contact with suppliers and customers to develop processes or resolve problems. Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: evaluate products and processes; perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to dealers, customers, team members, suppliers, and other units; support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, dealers, customers, and suppliers; and develop and maintain keen understanding of internal and external customers’ needs, and represent the company externally.Sr. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key skills to be developed at this level are data extraction/analysis, failure analysis and problem solving, application of simulation tools and methods, and practical application of theory and concepts.Job Duties/Responsibilities may Include, but are not limited to:Responsible for program administration, including budget allocation, milestone reports, and stakeholder updates; program execution, including defining test plans based on simulation, overseeing test execution, data collection, data analysis, and report writingPerforms complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves issues, while managing multiple priorities, bringing contributors from the section or across the enterprise together to work on the project as neededResponsible for learning and teaching others in engine system technologiesBasic QualificationsMaster’s degree in an accredited Engineering program, plus 4+ years of industry experience with at least 3 years of engine system/component design/test/validation experience3 or more years of experience leading projects in a gated design system such as Caterpillar’s NTI/NPI/CPI system with demonstrated completion of a projects, with focus on deliveryAbility to identify process gaps and suggest improvements to streamline product developmentUnderstanding of internal combustion engine concepts (spark ignition, compression ignition, Otto cycle, Diesel cycle, Miller cycle, etc.), components (turbochargers, valve terrain, etc.), and durability/performance requirements (BMEP vs. temperature limits, fatigue limits, emissions, etc.)Track record of success solving challenging technical problems and delivering projects through completionAbility to take initiative and drive creative ideas forward, focusing on delivering project resultsAbility to thrive and adapt in a high growth, rapidly changing environmentExcellent written, oral, and presentation skillsAbility to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate mannerPassion for collaboration and ability to align multiple stakeholders internally and externallyTop Candidates will also haveExperience in diesel or gas combustion simulation (GT Power Suite, Converge, StarCD, Python)Alternate fuel technology understanding/experience (natural gas, methanol, ethanol, DME, hydrogen)Additional InformationThe location for this position is Mossville, IL.Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.This position may require up to 15% travel.Employee benefit detailsOur goal at Caterpillar is for you to have a rewarding career.
