Job DescriptionThe Drug Product Design and Development (DPDD) group within the Small Molecule CMC organization is responsible for designing and developing formulations that enable delivery of AbbVie’s candidate molecules in a dosage form for clinical evaluation during early development. DPDD is also accountable for developing drug products for Phase 3 clinical study and advancing for product commercialization. AbbVie’s DPDD is seeking a highly motivated, talented, and creative scientist with a proven track record in the design and characterization of solid oral dosage forms. We have a challenging opportunity for a Senior Scientist based in North Chicago, IL. The primary role for this position is to serve as formulation lead. The person will be working with cross-functional development partners to develop stage appropriate drug products to support clinical development. The desired candidate will have a strong background and hands-on experience in formulation design, characterization, and process development.Key responsibilities include:
Lead the formulation design for small molecule development candidates within the AbbVie pipeline.
Interface to drug product development teams to ensure that biopharmaceutical and physicochemical considerations are incorporated into formulation design.
Advance scientific expertise within function. Proactively demonstrate leadership by advising and sharing knowledge and expert opinions with subordinates, peers, and senior management.
Ensure development of technologies and scientific innovation that improve the capability to formulate small molecules within the AbbVie pipeline
Collaborate with other functions within AbbVie to align a broad range of strategies that directly support development programs
Ensure compliance with AbbVie safety, quality and regulatory policies and government regulations
QualificationsBasic:
MS (8-10 yr. experience) or PhD (0-4 yr experience) in Pharmaceutics, Physical Pharmacy, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or Material Sciences.
Preferred:
Fundamental understanding of physicochemical properties as related to formulation design.
Solid understanding of various manufacturing technologies/processes for oral formulation development
Hands-on experience in drug product development and characterization of formulations.
Scientific problem solving, experimental design and trouble shooting skills.
Technical awareness in various aspects of drug development, adherence to rigorous scientific method, and commitment to the scientific process.
Strong communication skills and ability to clearly communicate theories/concepts, influence others without authority, and drive technical excellence.
Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team setting.
