Senior Software Quality Engineer - INF001651

The Senior Software Quality Engineer is responsible for day-to-day management of defects discovered via all forms of software testing performed within the IS Department of UScellular. Responsible for triaging all defects assigned to the team, which includes conducting essential technical analyses to assign each defect to the most appropriate development, infrastructure, or QA team. Once each defect is assigned, this individual works to track and drive each defect to resolution. These defect management duties need to cover all pre-production activities including: Functional Testing, Performance Testing, Lab Testing, and Training Environment upgrades and support. Incident and defect management is also required during Dress Rehearsals and Production Implementations, including extended production support performed as an IS Warranty Lead.

Essential Functions
  • Triage all defects assigned to the team, by performing technical analyses including debugging, reviewing log captures, reviewing data stored in various repositories (e.g., databases and files), and any other form of troubleshooting as deemed necessary.
  • Determine the owners of each defect or incident by supporting necessary root cause analyses. Once ownership is determined; facilitate and drive the defect to resolution.
  • Manage and track all defects found during all pre-production activities including: Functional Testing, Performance Testing, Lab Testing, and Training Environment upgrades and support.
  • Manage and track all incidents and defects found during Dress Rehearsals and Production Implementations and provide extended production support as an IS Warranty Lead.
  • Warranty Lead is the liaison between IS and our Business partners throughout the warranty phase following product implementation. Responsible for driving release-related issues/defects and keeping Business partners and other key stakeholders updated.
  • Report status to Release Governors, Project Managers, and others as appropriate, to empower them with information that supports project and release needs. Actively participate on defect/gating calls and subsequently driving these defects forward.
  • Advise manager of any risks, issues, and concerns. Provide options and contribute to the remediation of such items.
  • Periodically provide data and reports to demonstrate team performance and to provide metrics to compare releases. Contribute to efforts leading to continuous improvements.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, related degree, or 5+ years of equivalent work experience required.
  • Strong organizational skills including good time management, prioritizing tasks, estimating activities, and meeting deadlines. Must effectively prioritize own work, and the work of the team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong desire to learn and share information with others.
  • Must be self-motivated and take initiative.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a lead.
  • Effective at building good working relationships with business partners and project team members in a matrix organization.

Required Technical Experience
  • 5+ years of development experience, working in a Unix environment, including experience with using SQL and the Oracle database is required.
  • 5+ years of experience working within an SDLC and working on projects involving other teams is required.
  • Solid background of designing, developing & testing various software applications.
  • Experience partnering with Development, QA, and other internal teams to review, inspect, document, and ensure the quality of software products being tested and eventually implemented.
  • Demonstrated grasp of debugging, reviewing log captures and other forms of technical troubleshooting.
  • Experience in several aspects of IT Service Management, including Change Management, Incident Management and Problem Management. Experience using tools supporting these efforts, including BMC Remedy.
  • Experience in developing and testing software, including supporting the QA team and helping to troubleshoot defects to arrive at the root cause (Root Cause Analysis). Experience using tools supporting these efforts, including SQL, SoapUI, and HP Quality Center.
  • In-depth knowledge of standard web technologies, including app servers, web servers, databases, browsers, etc.
  • Hands-on experience in system data validation testing using SQL and PL-SQL.
  • Knowledge of ESB, Java, XML, REST, SOAP, and web services, and web applications.
  • Be able to coach/mentor other Software Quality Engineers in a distributed team.
  • Ability to work on parallel product releases, with multiple global QA and development teams.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience in the Telecommunications industry is preferred.
  • Experience with Amdocs Customer Experience Solutions (CES) software is preferred.
  • Experience with business- and operational-support systems (BSS/OSS) and related business processes, is preferred. These include billing, CRM, ordering, self-service, and service fulfillment.
