Location: Evanston, IL Salary: Not Specified by Client Description: The Research Computing Infrastructure team is responsible for the client's High-Performance Computing infrastructure. This consists of physical servers, back-end storage, operating system, integrated networking, parallel filesystem, scheduler, cloud-based infrastructure, and other associated infrastructure and applications. This includes consulting with researchers on the best solutions for their workload with could consist of deploying and managing non-HPC infrastructure.

As a Senior System Engineer, you will be member of a team responsible for managing the university's high performance computing infrastructure and related platforms. In this role you will also participate in an on-call rotation, system architecture discussions, respond to customer requirements and inquiries using the client's IT services management platform. You will also collaborate and partner with Internal teams including the Research Computing Services team as well as external research focused groups. Collaboration with partners and internal team members is essential to ensuring service delivery to the community meets expectations. The role reports to the manager of RCI team.

Please Note: 37.5 minimum hours per week, Monday through Friday, plus occasional evening and weekend work. 24 x 7 On call rotational schedule (averages one week per month).

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates in the planning, development, and coordination of systems related operations and projects for current and future High Performance Computing Infrastructure related initiatives within our group.
  • Provides systems recommendations regarding High Performance Computing Infrastructure, operations, automation, and self-service enablement within Platform Services.
  • Constructively participates in collaborative opportunities in support of systems improvements with internal and external organizations.
  • Reviews current systems configurations and recommends enhancements.
  • Facilitates coordination and a thorough understanding of systems requirements, attends project meetings, creates own meeting notes, creates appropriate ticketing, etc.
  • Suggests systems and architecture guidance for IT operations and the broader Northwestern community (as needed) for research services delivered by our team, in alignment with NUIT policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a secure access standard to High Performance Computing Infrastructure platforms.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as computer science, information technology, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years security administration or equivalent experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of general application architecture, High Performance Computing Infrastructure, and identity management technologies
  • Thorough knowledge of security-based frameworks, High Performance Computing Infrastructure, and associated technologies.
  • 2 Years implementing general IT or other relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years' experience working on mid to large scale environments with 3-tier applications.
  • 3 years of systems administration or equivalent experience.
  • 2-4 years' experience with red hat Linux, windows, or storage Systems administration or equivalent experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to understand how an enterprise application is designed (Network, application, Database, Storage, Server).
  • 2-4 years' of installing, supporting, and managing Operating Systems and applications.
  • Technical ability to translate business requirements into actionable information technology tasks.
  • Experience delivering Technical solutions against desired business outcomes.
  • Experience testing, evaluating, documenting, and communicating product and technical benefits to solutions.
  • Experience working in a team setting with a scheduled On-call support rotation.
