Alliant Energy has an outstanding opportunity for a Transmission and Renewable Energy Engineer to join the team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa or Madison, Wisconsin! We are looking for a self-motivated and passionate Electrical Engineer with an interest in renewable energy, innovative technologies, and the evolution of the generation fleet and transmission system to join our team. Candidates located in Wisconsin or Iowa will work on a Hybrid basis, offering the flexibility to work from home while also spending time at one of our locations to interact with team members in-person. Relocation assistance will be provided for candidates looking to move to the Cedar Rapids or Madison areas to work on a hybrid basis.

What you will do

This position w ill be engaged with plan ning new renewable energy and energy storage project s as well as other generation types . This involves the navigation of projects through the MISO generation interconnection queue. These projects can ultimately be utilized to meet the capacity and energy needs for IPL and WPL customers. The position will also be involved in local and regional transmission planning and understand ing ways the transmission system can be optimized through the use of alternative solutions, energy storage and other technologies. Other items included in the scope of the position are performing modeling work to analyze the impacts of the changing resource fleet and find ing the best solutions to system and customer needs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs work on a variety of complex assignments requiring in-depth analysis to determine appropriate solutions; uses a variety of complex tools and resources to solve problems.
  • Collaborate, perform, and lead reliability and/or economic driven studies including voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, and stability assessments.

  • Perform load flow analysis on complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels. Able to clearly document and communicate results and recommendations as appropriate including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations.
  • Develop and apply a thorough understanding of various planning criteria, guidelines, standards ( e.g. NERC and analysis software packages such as PSS/E and TARA.
  • Maintains an awareness of customer needs and expectations and proposes solutions. Is proactively involved in the identification and solution of problems falling within assigned area of responsibility with minimal guidance.
  • Goes beyond generally accepted guidelines to analyze problems and recommend possible solutions. Solves complex problems by identifying new ways of using existing procedures, techniques and resources. Applies independent judgment in complex situations regularly relying on experience.
  • Consistently demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to develop recommendations which provide technically sound and the most cost effective solutions, understanding the application to other problems.

  • Makes decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge and may have an impact on multiple areas of the business with proper sign off from customer.
  • Leads and/or makes positive, supportive contributions on teams that deal with complex technical or operational problems.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission Required

Required Experience

  • 9 years of related experience.
  • Project management leadership experience preferred, along with ability to deal with subcontractors and cross-functional teams; recognized as having expertise in a particular area of the discipline.

  • Transmission planning experience
  • PSSE software proficiency
  • NERC standards experience
  • RTO (regional transmission operator) experience
