Job Description

Job Title: Pathologist, Speech

  • Expanding our department to provide services for students with expected caseloads of 35-40 students

Reports To: Principal and Director of Special Services

Summary

The speech pathologist provides special services to students with communicative deviations/impairments or hearing impairments which interfere with their ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program. The speech-language pathologist is a communication specialist who works with language handicaps, articulation deficits, dysfluencies, and voice disorders.

The speech pathologist is responsible for planning and implementing the goals of the Individual Education Plan (IEP.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides screening to identify language, voice, fluency, and articulation deviations/impairments and hearing impairments
  • Conducts speech and hearing examinations for referred students
  • Provides an assessment and diagnosis of speech, language, and hearing
  • Serves as a member of the pre-assessment team to assist in the placement of students in special education programs
  • Provides appropriate Individual Education Programs of therapy for meeting individual student’s needs
  • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community
  • Consults with teachers as to the individual child’s progress
  • Maintains lists of referred, screened and eligible speech students and a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services
  • Compiles and maintains pertinent speech, hearing, and language records
  • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
  • Submits an end-of-year report and other information requested by the Director of Student Services
  • Serves as a resource in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring of students with suspected and identified speech and language impairments
  • Provides screening at the request of teachers, parents, or as a part of the Student Improvement Team process
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members
  • Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Oversees assigned budgets
  • Supports the District’s educational mission for all students and implements all Board regulations and policies in a fair and equitable manner
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the superintendent or designee may assign

Salary and work year to be established by the Auburn-Washburn Board of Education.

Certificates/Licenses/Endorsements/Registrations

  • Certificate or license from Kansas Department of Education or Kansas Department of Health and Environment
  • Must be special education endorsed.

Education and/or Experience

  • Graduate from approved program in Speech-Language Pathology required

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational reports, professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals. Ability to write clearly; keep detailed records; effectively produce reports, letters, and memoranda; and to carry out complex tasks. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and to deal with a variety of variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
